better visibility for dash readouts

Hope this hasn't been covered somewhere else, but if it has I haven't found it. Has anyone come up with any kind of solution for making the LCD readouts (mileage, temp. ect) more visible. My 73-year-old eyes find it very difficult to focus on...in the daylight, due to the high contrast between the high light level from the windshield and low light level at the readout. At night, it just needs more illumination. I have toyed with the idea of adding a couple of white LED's to the top of the spedometer housing, but the real solution would just be larger characters and more illumination of the readout. I saw the post about changing the LED colors for the background lighting . Looks real neat, but wouldn't solve my problem. Maybe smart will come out with some kind of a retro-fit in the future. Meantime, anyone else out there have a problem with this, and have you come up with any kind of solution?

A while back, someone with a similar issue did put a white piece of paper flat on the steering column to reflect more light on the display. Would you care experimenting with this idea?

Couldn't trace the OP. Was it a business card, or something like that?...
