I was brainstorming and thought about trying to use a rubber grommet, instead of drilling a hole into the plastic tow cap. Not sure if it will work but thinking of trying it.
Since I am not sure of the thread pitch, it would take some experimenting, but you could find a regular stud (male/male). I figure for less than $25 dollars you could have some 1 3/4 inch aluminum spikes.
those might work, the only problem is most screwback spikes for clothing are at most 3/4" or 5/8" wide, however the smart bumper holes are 1 1/4" wide, bar end spikes just happen to be 1 1/4" aswell.
For me it's a free mod, I wanted them for looks, not function, smartmadness spikes are nice, but if you put a hole in someones bumper I can see a lawsuit happening.
Mine are for function, then fashion. The fact that they are dangerous is what makes them fun.

No lawsuits in my city, only banged up bumpers. It seems EVERYONE drives by braille and everyone's door is spring loaded so when they release the door latch the door opens at 90 mph stopping only when hitting another car/truck.
Somebody needs to make a kind of Goth-like spike bar that screws into the tow hook socket and is the full width of the plastic bumper that will just tear the hell out of anything that runs into it....Goth black wrought iron would make them notice it with chrome spikes against my grey plastic. Make the spikes have some threatening, but decorative shape....very sharp.
