Electric Smart A/C

Can anyone direct me to information of how the A/C works in the Electric Smart?
Thanks...

Both heating and air conditioning will reduce the overall driving range. However, the power electronics regulate the heating and air conditioning so as to minimize the strain on the battery. That's taken directly from the smartUSA electric drive website.

Thanks, but looking for "how it works" as a possible retrofit in a different vehicle.

Oh...okay. Well, I don't think the A/C system is all that different on any electric car. I mean, you'd still need the same basic components (compressor, evaporator, condensor, etc...) with the only big difference being that the compressor is powered electrically instead of being belt-driven by the engine.

Should be an electric pump or an electric motor driving the condenser pump.

What voltage are you thinking of running this type of system off of?

Garage
My guess is they would use a "heat pump"

I'm working on a Smart engine conversion and would rather find an alternative to the OEM compressor. I've looked at several aftermarket kits that either use a 12volt compressor or an invertor that converts 12volt to 110volts. I thought I'd see what Smart had available first.

I'll tell you something....we'll soon see heating & cooling systems in cars that don't use any of the conventional parts of a typical A/C system. No compressors, condensors, evaporators etc...not even any refrigerant. These systems are being developed mainly to enhance fuel mileage and help extend driving ranges of hybrids and electric vehicles. But until we see this new technology in cars, I think you'll have to find a suitable electrically driven compressor that will work for your application.

Look up Peltier modules....can both heat and cool - but are not very effective....yet.

Thermoelectric reactors have been around for MANY years. What I'm talking about is the next generation that will use reactors along with high energy thermal storage to both heat and cool a vehicle's interior. There's a joint venture between Delphi and Sheetak, along with funds from the DOE to bring this technology to proof of concept. From what I've read, they are well under way.
