Short ram obviously is not gonna pass the visual, that is why you SAVE your stock parts.

The other pipes that utilize the stock airbox will probably be fine depending on smog tech discretion.

...I could care less what the tech sees or think of a mod..all that matters is what the sniffer gets and the computer prints out...or is Kalifornia different?

California has a visual inspection to see that all equipment is in place and all the hoses are connected and in good condition. They also pressure check the fuel cap and the evap. system. Any mods to the engine or emission control systems have to be CARB approved. You can get away with not having your car inspected for 6 years after purchase. However, if you sell the vehicle, a smog cert. will have to be presented in order to transfer title.

So what is the problem? It only takes a few minutes to swap to the OEM intake before you go to get inspected.

If it was a black version of the hose, I doubt they'd even notice it wasn't standard.

We obviously can't jump through every hoop set out as it would cost thousands getting parts tested and for what, a certificate to sell and use in 1 state.
It just isn't worth the time, money and hassle.
If they want to be that heavy handed that they don't allow the changing of an inlet pipe on a smart car but they let people drive around in Hummers, I wouldn't even bother myself with it. They aren't taking it seriously.

Here in our town we have a group of law enforcement folks that are trained to look for non-compliant mods mainly because of the street racing thing. They have been known to tow and impound your ride.Mucho dollars.About 2g's + fines and hassles to regain your car.Yes this blows!!But the saving grace is these guys have not seen many smart cars the probably don't even know where the motor in one lives let alone what it's suppost to look like

Well, it seems as though these are selling really well so thanks to all of you.
Forge made 40 of them, 37 have been sent to America since I started this thread, the other 3 were sold in the UK.
Forge are delighted, the drawback being that I went to order some to sell at a trade show and they have sold out
Typical! a victim of my own success.

Just a thought.. If the smart came stock with the aforementioned intake tubes, there would be a manufacturer selling one with "resonant chambers" (And of course they would be blue.)

Market forces at work! The Forge folks do a great job getting these to the US and keeping in touch with customers - the personal touch helps. Only drawback so far - getting the resonating chamber off the '09 models. Took a look at mine yesterday, decided to think on it some more.

...hey John...remove all the hardware "including the long skinny metal bracket" that holds the receptacle were the box "snaps" into before you even attempt to remove the box...the metal bracket has a bolt that can be reached from the bottom of the car..with this bracket removed is a piece'o cake to get the knuckle buster box out...

jetfuel...where's that Band-Aid at?
