I'm more than a little confused. You'll have to admit that the Smart is probably THE hottest item in the automotive press these last few days and I just got off the phone to Flowmaster Exhaust Systems and asked how soon they would be producing an aftermarket system for the Passion model that I have on order. Well, I was somewhat surprised, first of all, because he laughed so long but mostly I was amazed to hear that they have "no plans at present" of making any add ons to the Smart. I explained that this would be a perfect market to enter. If this pans out well for them they could look into the Prius and the Aptera. OK, OK the Aptera is all electric, but that's not the point. Anyway, I plan to hit the local speed shop and have my own system made up. 2.5 dia stainless with a nice big fart can sticking out the back. Yeah? Well they laughed at my bud Brian when he fixed up his Mom's Tercel and that came out really great, until she made him take it all back off.
I'm going to be very new to the smart tunning market but I think the smart will require a certain amount of back pressure and while your may think your car sounds good... it likely wont and there is little to no chance you will be going fast.
I would say that you will have a decent chance at out performing this gal...
I hear you. I have Flowmasters on my 05 TBird, but the smart is a different story due to the engineering of its exhaust/emission system. If I recall correctly, in all of the sites I have visited internationally that market smart add ons and mods I have not found any exhaust mods other than tail pipe extensions. This has got to tell us something.
Actually, in the few reported instances of a mod being done to the 451, the imporoved airflow due to a less restrictive exhaust along with a less restrictive air filter has provided a noticeable improvement....at least to the psyche. Remember, the 451 has 4 valves per cylinder and is capable of moving a fair amount of air and fuel through.
ARed08 - you sure sound younger than the 58 your profile says.
IMHO when you only have three bangers, you want it as quiet as possible. To my ear - until you reach larger displacement and more cylinders (a long stroke in-line six minimum) it tends to sound more like a loud rattle than a throaty powerplant.
The exhaust system does have some relationship with the induction system - more in, more out. But there is a complication that requires some real expertise to resolve, more than bolting on off-the-shelf parts. If the engine has an aggressive cam profile and valve timing overlap, some of the early incoming charge can be pulled out through the still closing exhaust valve and be lost. A precisely determined amount of back pressure is needed. Variable valve timing further complicates the situation. It will be best to leave the induction and exhaust system (taken together) to the experts to engineer, lest you leave yourself with nothing but noise and possible a drop in engine efficiency.

I like to think that I'm younger than my 58 years also, thanks. I was waiting to read some of the technical mish mash that I knew would result from my posting. People, THAT WAS A JOKE! I'm not surprised though that it would be taken seriously with the frenzy that has been whipped up around this car.
Sorry for the interruption, you can now return to your regular conjecture and speculation.

Nope, not a chance. I've got a Vespa LX150, which is the replacement for the ET4 in your photo with the same drivetrain. I can assure you that the smart would not outperform that scoot off the line, stoplight to stoplight, and probably not in the 1/4 mile. Off the line, I'm quicker than most normal cars, and it surprises the guys who rev at me and take off, only to get beat. It really surprises the ricers in their Civics
Maybe once CoinOps gets his smart, we can film a race.
