HAM Radio in a Smart

Hello all you HAMs, I was discussing antenna mounting with Dave KG6MCL in another thread and it occurred to me...how many HAMs have improved their Smart by installing a HAM radio?

I was wondering how an antenna could be installed. I don't have my Smart yet, so I can't figure out options.

As I recall, our Smart-to-be will have a plexi roof with a sliding sun shade. This makes routing the coax tough. And I doubt if my family is going to let me drill a hole in the roof right off the bat!

And if the roof is plexi, it's not going to be a great ground plane. Maybe install droopers on your vertical? That will look awsome! Well, to another HAM, anyway...

I thought the Smart may pose some interesting problems to HAM radio, and wondered how many of you have come up with solutions.

So if you're interested, here's something to add to your QSL card:

I'm trying a Larson Klugard window mount on the front windshield. Tried it in the corner first, but the wipers are just too efficient! Hit the mount first time I turned them on. Now I'm trying a spot at the top just to the passenger side of the mirror mount.
I have the cabrio so my options are even more limited. No HF, Just 144 and 440 is good enough. Mount the radio under the passenger seat and the head maybe in the glove box.

Tow hook, right rear. Fab up a mount, feed coax in through boot.

But look out... the car is perfectly tuned to around 2 meters and will start to shake and roll at about the middle of the band. Good luck A2Jack

There's already a thread on this forum on HAM radio.

Anybody installing a ham radio in the smart?

I searched for HAM first, and got no hits. Honest! Sorry for the double post.

I use a Diamond adhesive brcket Antenna mount, HRKS with a NR-770HA antenna. I got it from AES in Las Vegas. Works great. I mounted it about 3" from the rear of the glass roof, just far enough for the back glass to come up without it making contact. I works great. "KE5DXI"
