other possibilities to improve performance are a pneumatic shifter that can be wired in to the existing paddle shifters on the steering wheel and a stage 2 turbo, producing well upwards of 400bhp.

We managed to get the new engine in the Smart Car with out cutting anything. It is only up there with a strap and a couple of bars right now.

I think I have stared at this thing long enough to come up with a decent plan. The rear mount will tie into the bumper support, the cylinder head will tie into the stock motor mount locations and somehow the front motor mount will tie in also.
Then the whole assembly will hold both the engine and differential while keeping all of the factory frame, and suspension and braking components.

I am going to start building on Monday!

The Busa motor is a conventional wet-sump. The picture of the motor from underneath the car isn't really accurate. When its all said and done the oil pan will sit level in the car. I will probably end up making a new oil pan and oil pick up because we plan to do plenty of road racing stuff and drifting. A motorcycle isn't designed to take the lateral G's of a car and we don't want to starve the engine for oil.

Thats what I was wondering. I would like to know whats involved in the oil pan and if windage tray. Thanks again for helping us diy home garage guys to keep the dream alive.

Making a little bit of progress, It is going kind of slow because it is a lot of stuff to fit into a little space, I am trying to think like 10 steps ahead. This is what I have done so far.

Made some brackets out of cardboard and Nick brought them back to me in steel!!!

This is the vent that goes to the PCV valve, It was really in the way so I made a smaller one. The original was baffled for the motorcycle to lean and wheelie I think.

Left hand side engine mount

These plates bolt where the original Smart engine mounts did.

Still haven't had to cut the car at all. This makes me happy.

Upper engine mounts.

This bar sits inside of the rear bumper support and shares it's mounts.

What I have done so far. Going to try and fit the diff today.

Fitting nicely around motor with a kick-up for axle clearance.

Wow.... that is niceee.... I know this is going to be basically a race smart car but.. have you guys considered the vibration of this engine transmitting thru to the chassis? The reason I ask is because I installed a torque link that replaced the conventional rubber one in front of the engine.. I think I still see your stock one attached to the car but when I converted to a solid / urthane piece.. the whole car was turned into literally a smart massage chair! I felt like my teeth were about to fall out of my mouth from the vibration like as though as I didn't have any counterweights on the crankshaft! haha..

Keep up the great work!

Cheers!

I don't know about that, tha Busa motor is integral to the frame on the bike, I rode the bike and it felt very smooth. Unless there is some kind of harmonics problem vibrations should be fairly low + I'm sure the car is not intended to be as Caddy like as a stock smart.

Actually, This is going to be about 80 percent street car and 20 percent track/drift car so I am trying to keep it as user friendly as possible. The entire new engine cradle will be mounted on 3/16 rubber pads. The bike engines run a lot smoother than car engines but I figured this may help a little anyway.
