Austin, funny that you mentioned. I brought the smart to a friend's shop. We initially thought we could finish in a couple of hours. But only installed the rears. I drove the car in that configuration (front stocks, rear eibachs) for a week before returning to install the fronts. That 21mm nut (or was it 22mm?) is indeed a pain. We used an impact to loosen it. Check out this pic on how to insert an extension. Removing the entire knuckle, brake + strut assembly is the most time consuming.

Actually, I modified a tool to use for that application. I took a 13/16ths (21mm) spark plug socket, and then bore it out with a 1/2" drill press bit. Then I used a T45 bit through that to hold the strut in place. The spark plug socket has a top that you can get a wrench around...

My problem came when prying the "a" arm off of the strut. I accidentally tore my ball joint grease boot, which is integral to the a-arm... a $130.00 part...plus labor for install...

take the ball joint nut off,

put some tension between the arm and the strut, (I used a 2x2 about 18 inches long)

give the side of the strut right next to where the nut was a quick firm hit with a hammer, it will pop right off without damaging the boot.

I think both brands are great. I have the H&R springs on my Smart and have no complaints.
If you guys live in California I highly reccommend if you are not mechanicaly inclined to have Smart Madness do the install for you.

I had mine done at my smart center since im on the East Coast and job was done right worry fee.

I believe I only had to pay $200 for the front and rear install.

just commenting on install costs that ppl have mentioned, but i though blue collar jobs in the US paid low wages?

it seems not, for the average spring install over there of approx 200usd i paid 80aud at a suspension dealer for the install of springs, the rears are easy it should be basically free of charge when you install the fronts, the fronts are a pita though... yet still i've had them in and out a few times now and they only take approx 20min to do the complete front Job and its the Only 451 smart they have ever done.. afaik i have the only lowered 451 in australia lol

Please tell me how installing one set of SPRINGS differ from installing another set of SPRINGS. I'll give you a dollar bill or 4 quarters or 10 dimes or 20 nickels... to explain it too me.

Please don't feed BS... a SPRING is a SPRING. The install will not differ.

Thank you for your kind post Mr. Overkll,

We must say it was very kind of you to post on a forum that we are feeding someone BS. Perhaps if we ever met or if you ever done business with us you would think twice about posting that comment. However, since this is an open forum you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

To answer your question how is one spring different than another and how could our installer possibly say that one was easier to install than another?

Well, it is rather simple to explain. Personally, I am by no means an expert in springs. I leave that to our manufacturing partner with over 40 years of experience. After doing a bit of research on the subject here is what we found out.

Each spring set up is different. You can have a lowering spring or a performance spring. A lowering spring gives your car a more drastic reduction in height. A performance spring is designed mostly to improve the handling of the vehicle. If you are looking for a daily driver with a lower stance and an added benefit of better handling than a lowering spring is what you want. If you are looking to track your car than you would want to look for a performance spring. Since most will not track the smart a lowering spring is the ideal set up.

Each spring set up can have different number of coils and each set up can have the coils spaced apart differently. In addition, they can also be of different tolerances. If I am incorrect about any of the above I truly apologize. I am simply explaining what I learned over time as I did research on the subject.

When doing our own springs we decided to go with a set up that is similar to the H&R spring, meaning offering folks the same type of a drop, but at the same time have a bit softer ride. Our goal was to also offer them at a lower cost and simply provide our customers with more choices.

The reason our installer said it was easier to install is simply because the springs were different size and the coils had different spacing. Here is how it went. I walked in the shop and asked him "How was the install". He said, I did the new springs on the Yellow car and the Eibachs on the Black one and the Yellow ones went in easier". I am guessing that was because they were shorter and fell in place easier.

If we wanted to as you say "BS" someone we would could certainly find something a lot better to talk about or claim than this.

Thank you for your time...
