We are working on that, sealed box with the opening to the outside away from the engine like we manufacture for the Corvettes.

The mission, should you decide to accept it; is to reduce the intake pressure required to shove air into the cylinder and decrease the air temp. increasing the density of the air in the cylinder.
For what its worth, I've just purchased and fitted a TIK mocal pipe and ITG air filter from Wellsmart, in the U.K. The car does feel less restrictive but the difference to the sound is barely noticeable.
I followed the instructions posted on evilution's website on how to remove the existing TIK, which is a good source for DIY tips;
Access to the engine bay is a little awkward as the carpet matting has a tendency to spring forward on top of your head while you unclip the jubilee clips! Other than that, and the aching back, it was easy.
I was planning to home-brew a similar system this weekend. I am not looking for performance gains, but rather mpg gains. (and it usually sounds a little nicer too.) On my Saturn Vue, I put a cone filter directly on the air intake, which is right at the radiator, and sealed some of the holes in the front of the engine compartment. The hotter air going into the intake causes the engine to run in 'lean' mode, and uses less gas. I get between 2-4mpg better than than the stock filter box with a K&N filter, and the K&N was 2mpg better than stock.
Will post pics if I get around to it this weekend... also doing horns and HID if I can find the time.
I've been running my VUE minus the resonator but with the stock box for the past 98K miles. Once I got over driving it hard to hear the intake growl, I too saw a 1-3 MPG increase per tank. The only thing that sucks is that I am putting an air filter in it at about every thrid oil change - not too bad.
However, are you sure yours is leaning out? We took mine out on the road with a Tech-II (I used to work at a Saturn dealer), and it was showing a normal 14.7:1 without really needing to adjust too much. It's also sucking cool air from the fog lamp grille area on the right side.
To me it was more about the sound and a slight bit of performance increae (perhaps placebo), but the fuel economy was an unexpected gift... I just need to stop doing the drags to redline in 3rd gear next to a Jersey wall to hear my intake and exhaust on it

Yeah, I had the tilter sitting right on the intake, and had sealed the rest of the engine compartment with some plastic panels I had laying around. The engine temp went up about 20 degrees, and accelleration sucks. I think the 0-60 time went from 16.5 stock, to 14.6 CAI, to 18-20ish with the HAI. I did have someone run a Tech-II or III (not sure which, it was like a Micro-PC with the plug built in and he could re-program just about anything he wanted too. Kept pushing me to have him change the shift points or remove the govenor, but I was afraid of voiding the warranty.) He did verify that it had leaned out. Takes a few minutes though, and tends to run more normal in the winter. Improved my winter mpg from 16 to 22. Summer went from 18-20 to 24-26. (This is with mostly city driving. Not sure what it would be like with all freeway miles).

I think I saw a post by BIGPERFORMANCE in UK that stated they also developed a silicone CAI. Is BIG in the house to attest to some dyno testing?
I agree that it seems a PERFECT place to get modified airbox in there and put your choice of either a high flow dry filter or a K&N.
Who makes commercial cold air intakes that can do a joint venture? Secret Weapon R, K&N, Fujitsu Ten, AEM, Umnitza, and maybe BPP really soon.
