New Fuel Door from Smart Madness

Here is my latest addition before the Old Town event.
Upgraded my fuel door. Got it from Smart Madness.

Love it! Solid, high quality product. Nicely complimenting black tridion cell.
Of course I could not leave it the way I received it. I plyed in Illustrator and created "WARNING: Racing Fuel Only" decal. Took EPS file to the local sign shop and here is the results.
Installation took about 5 minutes.

Here is my old Fuel Door cover:

Here is the new one.

Old one is DIY F-150 silver fuel door cover painted black and attached to the modified stock door with double sided tape. Decal is covered with clearcoat, so if you decide to remove it, you probably would need to repaint the lid. If you still interested, PM me with address and I will ship it to you.

As a side note... I just installed this door on an '09 and found that the door stuck out farther that the original door on the top and back edges due to a slight bevel in the slide mount between the original cover and hinge assemblies. It is hard to notice but since I am anal about stuff like this I removed the door and trimmed the plastic grid-like molding that faces out on the hinge assembly. I removed about 3/4 of the plastic from the back edge to the center of the door. By doing this the door sits flush all the way around except for the very bottom which has a slight lip on the original cover.

As noted previously, the door looks GREAT and the black is a perfect match if you have a black cell. Overall I am very happy with my purchase and the service from SmartMadness.

When we made the doors, we tried to make it thinner but the problem was the strength of the door and getting hardware short enough so it doesn't go through the door. Thank you for your comment.

Yeah...I have access to a milling machine and thought about milling the backside to account for the bevel but was concerned about the mounting hardware having enough material to screw into. Since I don't plan on removing the door the best option was removing the plastic mounting surface on the hinge assembly. Again, it looks and works great and would recommend if someone is looking for a more finished look to the fuel door. Thank you Cisco for the quick reply as well!

Cube,
Is that decal vinyl ?

I'm contemplating somthing simular, I have the same fuel door. I thought it is very well made, looks great, but it may be a little heavy for the actual hinge.

Yes, it is just vinyl. I designed the decals and my local print shop cut them for me.

On my original cover "Radioactive Hazard" I sprayed clear coat over. After 8 month of use decal still in the same condition as on the day I installed it.
Second version "Racing Fuel Only" is not clear coated, but still looks fine after 6 weeks of use.

I think I still have the "Racing Fuel Only" AI (vector) file somewhere on my computer.

Thanks for the info. Did you color match the vinyl? Do they have that much of a selection?

The only vinyl I've ever had was white window decals. Wonder if they can match the Smart Blue?

Most shops should have large selection of color vinyl. It is very hard to get exact match, but you should be able to find something similar. (For example, my shop did have 5 or 6 different shades of red).
