Oil Gauge Added on Smart

This was very easy MOD, Note YOU WILL NEED A DEEP 24mm Socket to remove OEM sending unit. Got brass tee and the pix's tell the rest.

The brass Tee with the old OEM unit at the end, thread the old unit into the tee, then thread into engine. As you can't do if you thread both!! NO Room!! Then after thighting into engine, then thread new unit in. Used Heavy Duty Teflon(Pink). Then ran wire fom sending unit back to gauge, through rubber grommet on bottom right corner just past enginie cover.

If any Q/A either post or PM,
p1nball

I like the idea, could that guage you used be put inside the pod used for the clock? I really don't need two clocks! I am surpired that no aftermarket guage is available to replace the goofy 2nd clock.

Now you're going to have to tell everyone what part # you used for the manual gauge sending unit unless it was one of the kits that actually came with a sending unit (rare).

I wish I could get rid of that goofy clock on my dash as I'm always looking at the pod clock. ;)

You can fit this guage into the clock. Also that would make it easy to power the gauge and back light. By using the clocks power, ground and light curcuits. It is a little smaller in size but would take some work to make a frame and either hot glue, or contact cement in place!! the part was bought on line, and has the sending unit with it. I do recommend the Silver colored unit. After I got this one I found it at Auto Zone in Silver, a very close clone to the the Clock/Tech combo. Part# Auto Meter 5727 White KIt. The Tee,from Siemens VDO automotive 240 850D size M 10x1 VW Appl V3092001391D Was in a hurry, but if someones does the clock, will do it. I do feel like most that would be the proper place for it.

Thanks, p1nball

Make a frame? Possibly a billet frame to fill that gap? Too bad we don't have a member on the forum that someone could give the exact dimensions to and they could mill some up.....or is there someone here that could do that? Hmmmm. ;)

Oil Guage is nice to have, but unless I can put it somewhere that does not look bad. I probably won't add one just yet. Thanks for the Pics though.

Did the research on retrofitting a gauge into the clock pod months ago already.

Firstly, smart doesn't just sell a pod. So if you mess it up, you have to buy the entire tach/clock kit. Thanks to Paul Bridle for confirming this.

Secondly, the pod can take a 60mm gauge though you still need some kind of foam to fill up the spaces between. Tons of 60mm gauges in the market, Greddy, Defi, HKS, Autometer etc. The diameter is not the challenge but rather the depth of the gauge. The pod is about 2.4in deep and that's pushing it already. Look around in the market for a gauge that is 2in deep, cos you need to accommodate the plugs and wirings with the 0.4in left or so.

Technically you could let the gauge sit out of the pod a little due to the depth constrain. At that pt, you're faced yet with another challenge: aesthetics.

Installed a coolant + oil temp SPA Technique gauge myself. I went with a slightly different location than p1nball. Check here.
