Please forgive my ignorance...(intakes and computers)

...but I havent dealt with modifying cars in about ten years. I live in PA now and with inspections and emissions and the ever revolving set of rules, I stopped caring and moved full time into motorcycles. Simple, easy, and nobody messes with ya.

Now, I noticed everyone just bolting on cold air systems and exhausts, but no one has mentioned anything about fueling, ie programmers. I know from bikes, you change the exhaust, or more importantly, the intake, you have to adjust adjust for the lean condition that will ultimately follow.

So, my question is this, are the FI systems on these cars kinda like the old 5.0 mustangs (sorry, I know it goes back aways, but thats where I left off) fitted with the Mass Air Flow systems? With the MAF, you could get away with bolting on (to a certain point) items and the computer could compensate (again, to a point).

I just want to cover my bases, cause first and formost, this car is to be my daily transportation. Thanks...

Not a bad question.

Kind of like they guy who was adding acetone to improve mileage, it worked for a tank and then the computer would compensate and then we would lose the gains.

Hey Mods, Can we add to this title (Intakes and the computer)

Absolutely correct,

The closed loop system will comp. to a point. Then you will go lean.

Just an exhaust and intake, no problem for the computers on the smart.

When I got my remap from INMotion, they specifically asked me what mods I was running and modified appropriately (stage 2 base I believe). I went with them because they specialise in Bosch ECU.

What mods did you do? And did you have the car on the dyno? Before and after?

Thats something else I have noticed. Almost none of these products do not have dyno numbers to back them up. I really dont understand that. I work (now only part time) at a Harley dealer and unless a product has substance backing it up, people dont buy it. Harley people are very hard to sell to, to reassure them. I can appreciate that. Its rubbed off on me. I just dont feel like blowing my money on something that hasnt proven in some way to work.

Pardon my skepticism

performance mods= ECU remap- bastardized intake (Scoop from BPP, K&N filter, Silicone intake pipe)- Genius exhaust (I also have a BPP stealth exhaust if you're interested).

no dyno before or after, but if you come to one of the local meetings you can get a test drive :-)
