Smart Force Racing Turbo system released!

We would like to introduce our Smart Force Racing(manufactured by Speed Force Racing) turbo system for the Smart 451.This is a true bolt-on turbo system for the Smart Car.We designed this system to be Eco friendly and so far our stage 2 system has delivered 115WHP @ 8 psi of boost, with the stock cat still in place. This is a massive 90% increase in power! We offer a stage 1 system that generates 85WHP @ 5psi. Our tuning was done on a Dyno Dynamices Dyno which typically reads a little lower then a Dynojet. The nice thing about this kit is we use a top mount Garrett GT20 turbocharger which means you will not have to deal with turbos that blow oil like a low mounted system is susecptable of.We dont require the use of a scavenge pump or timer. We also designed this system to use the stock header and catylitic convertor or you can use your aftermarket header and see even bigger increases in power. We also have a stainless header that will be available soon.

Our engine management system utilizes a piggy back system with internal map sensor that controls fuel and retards ignition timing. We utilized 3 new 270CC injectors to upgrade your stock injectors to make sure we had plenty of fuel to keep our air/fuel mixture at 11.8 to 1 under boost.

We are very pleased with the performance of this turbo system and it really transforms this car into a fun car that has the power when you need it.Even though the transmission lags a little between shifts, the performance is still there.

How's your supporting vendor status coming?

Looks fast - would like to see some track numbers; and as pointed out by some comments on the site, our smarts do not have CVT automatic transmissions.

BTW, does mounting the air intake inside the engine compartment (as opposed to below the engine) help? Just curious.

We are waiting to here back from one of the guys whoo handles that on this board. We are ready and have cash in hand.We wanted to become a vendor before we posted but it is taking a bit of time.

The airfilter being in the engine compartment is not ideal but we still make power and we dont have to worry about picking up water and hydrolocking the engine.

Yo Tim, very nice!

Good to see you guys started a thread!

Btw, one question. Do you have to tap the sump for the oil return line?

right now they send the return oil via the drain plug. when i talked to the they expect to supply a drain plug already tapped with their kit.

No.You have to tap the oil drain plug for the turbos oil return. We will be offering a CNC'd drain plug down the road once things get going. The nice thing about doing it this way is it saves alot of labor since you dont have to pull your oil pan to tap it. And the other thing is that you can put a new drain plug in if you take the turbo system off and return it right back to stock.

Thanks for the clarification, Tim and Smartech.

I just thought of this for a moment. The drain plug is still the lowest point of the sump. There is an quasi-steady level of oil in the sump, of course given the constant flowrate of oil circulation etc. That level of course is higher than the oil drain plug.

The one follow up question I had of course was whether the Garrett is located higher than this oil level, which seems to be from the two pictures you have.

The other thing that popped into my mind is that there is suction from the drain plug area due to the oil pump, which explains that special drain plug/filter design. So there will be a positive pressure difference from the turbo to the drain plug area in addition to gravity. And I take that this difference is significant enough for oil to only drain from turbo to sump, unless of course the pump fails.

Brilliant design, Tim. Killing two birds with one pebble. Neat oil return line and ability to return to stock w/o a trace.

In any case, if you can make Pablo's M3 go at that kind of speed, I trust your engineering with this micro kit.

Bascially, you nailed it on the head. The turbo is much higher then the oil pan so it uses a gravity drain and we utlized the engines oil pump to help with the turbo drainage even further. We have been turbocharging all sorts of N/A vehicles for a long time and we will look at everything possible when designing the turbo system.A little thing like might be missed by others but we saw how it would help us do what we needed to do.

What MPG would I expect to see with the turbo, Stage 1? Stage 2?
