I've seen both turbos and supercharges put on motorcycle engines... if they can put them there, then I don't see why they can't plumb them into a smart.

well 4k for a turbo for a car that cost 12k new is stretching its worth, well thats my opinion but as with anything some kits are 2k others ar 4K and some get crazy on pricing. I think as their are more kits and other options prices will come down. its all that custom work that drives the price and numbers of smarts out their. if someone made a relitivley easy setup that could be duplicated fast the most expesive part would be the turbo, heck the dual charged mini cooper s system Featuring a Garrett GT3071R turbo cost's $3500 and theirs allot to it!

oh well either way im excited to see what the future holds for the aftermarket for this little guy...I mean car!

The problem with blowers is the associated heated intake charge. Most folks who want "instant" response say they want a blower --- then when their top end is sorely lacking compared to their turbocharged counterparts they sell their blowers and buy turbo kits.

With a small 3cyl motor you are never going to have the kick in the pants torque of a V8 on initial throttle manipulations --- what you will get is incredible torque over the rev range with a decent sized turbo.

Rotrex superchargers and a major compromise in terms of superchargers driven off the crank with turbo compressor efficiency.

So far a few 4cyl examples have been completed by Oscar Jackson and his new company Kraftwerks. Oscar Jackson designed the first roots blower kits for the Honda community more than 15 years ago. His roots blowers had their limits but did add some zip to 4cyl motors.

The rotrex units he is now using are much more sophisticated than the simple OEM type roots blowers he used in the mid 90s....they provide more power per psi and can be combined to make insane power.

For those who are crazy enough a Honda 4cyl has recently developed around 600whp with TWO rotrex superchargers stuffing air in. It had a terminal velocity of 246mph and thus owns the record for fastest (top speed) fwd 4cyl on earth.

I would normally write off superchargers because dealing with Hondas this long I have rarely seen one make more than 300whp whereas the turbo guys consistently make 8-900+whp....

But in the case of the smart and lower boost levels a rotrex unit would be a nice option with the capability to actuall make as much power as the internals can handle --- there is already a kit made for the Honda fit .... a 1.5L 4cyl motor --- 200whp or so.....I would imagine if that unit could be adapted the smart should see similar numbers to the stage 2 turbo setup with slightly higher boost (to offset the parasitic losses from running off the crank) so say 120-130whp from a smart with about 8-10psi.

KraftWerks: Home

The rotrex shows promise -- I think the turbo setups just offer a little more flexibility in sizing --- but a 200whp fit using the 1.5L motor is pretty impressive.

Perhaps Oscar may consider designing something for the smart?

-NANO- I've put many $90,000 engines in a $25,000 boat hull, the whole package is worth it in the end (at the finish line that is). Ever seen a real water ski race boat?

remember for a sc it takes power to make power as for a tubo its just working from exhaust gasses. i think if some one is looking for more get up and go from lower rpm's then they should find a smaller turbo. on my car the stock garrett t25 is makeing 15 lbs of boost by 3000 rpm but i havent had that trubo in a while but if your looking for more power through out the power band then a mitsubishi 16g fitted to the smart would net some crazy power and they are 550 brand new and those turbos pushed my car (95 mitsu gsx) well into the 12s and that was a full weight car with subs so prob 3500 pound car. so what im trying to say is imho turbos are much better for smarts and 4cyl cars and sc are better for they 6 and 8 cyl cars. if anyone has more qustions you can pm me or ill be on this thread because im a turbo tech its part of what i do among many other car related things.
