Turbo Charge ?

I came across a thread that a person said he/she put a turbo Charger on their Smart. I cannot find any after market and is it really worth having it? Ours is fast enough stock. Won’t the turbo cut the gas mileage?

I know that these are considered jokes with larger morots but because the Fortwo motors are SOOO puny, this system may just supply enough airflow to make a decent difference.

This specific implementation may be weak but I wouldn't dismiss the concept.

I am sure it would be possible to piece together a kit. As a VW guy, the 1.8t has a very small turbo (for extremely quick spooling) and would probably be a perfect Big Turbo for a smart. The most difficult thing to find, probably, would be software for it, and maybe fueling. And gas mileage will go down a bit, but it really depends on driving style. You have the "potential" to get way less gas mileage

Don't fool for the electric superchargers, they don't work, not even on small cars.

A turbo is already available, it is standard on turbo 451s.
Retrofitting is being worked on.

in Europe only, of course......which reminds me - I wonder how (where) they squeeze in the extra components. Where's the intercooler, for instance?

All of the G&K converted 2002-2006 smart cars are turbo charged.

ALL 450 smarts are turbocharged however, that turbo won't fit yours.

The air inlet goes a different way compared to the non turbo, the intercooler is in the bottom left as you stand behind the car. The exhaust also starts and exits from the opposite side from the NA smart.
This doesn't really apply to USA 451s as the exhausts are totally different to any of ours.

I would think something like that would throw the ECU completely out of wack.

Let us know what happens......

The turbo and NA 451s use the same ECU hardware, it just requires a different map.

Wow!

Wow is all I can think of saying right now, it is interesting to think that they have turbo Charges in Europe, with what they pay for Gas, and I would think anything that causes more consumption would be frowned upon. I have a feeling the Turbo in a Smart does just that, (consumes gas faster, than a Smart with out one.)
