Oh heeck yea.. just like how your car did the unthinkable this evening? Blowing off a silicone tubing that was pushed onto a BARB fitting WITH zip tie securing the end of it to making sure it can't come off the BARB?... yet you drove it hard enough to make it come off?! =P... ha ha ha..

I was kinda amused to see the wastegate actuator pressure tube (silicone) just attached to the barb fittings without any clamps... I put a corbin styled spring clamp on the volute side and a miniature T-clamp styled hose clamp on the actuator side. Since the intake air also includes blow-by gasses, the oils in the blow-by will eventually work their way into the wastegate actuator pressure tube joints and the tube will wanna pop off. In my experience, nylon zip ties get soft in the heat, so they may not maintain enough tension to keep an oily tube on it's barb fitting. I tested my wastegate actuator on the bench (I leave nothing to chance). The stock actuator starts to crack open right at 9 PSI (without any exhaust pressure on the wastegate valve) -- and is fully open around 11 PSI. In use, you figure that the wastegate will crack open around 8 PSI and boost pressure will peak around 10 to 11 PSI. The SFR turbo manifolds are WELL MADE. Works of art! It's a shame I've gotta "hide" it all by installing it in the engine bay... It's too bad the Smart engine cover doesn't have a window in it!

The tubing on that turbo was supplied like that from.. garrett believe it or not heh.. but of course we make sure it's secure Apparently I need to find those other clamps that makes a 360 degree seal... they use them for fuel pressure injector lines as well... Guess tiny small zipties doesn't work under heat... I could put a window in the engine bay but the cover would cover it up and... the polycrabonate would sure get soft in the intense heat that the turbo put out

The turbo manifolds are indeed well made I never ran the wastegate on a bench, now I know the exact specs! Thanks! It was suppose to be rated at 8 psi but now that explains why it's easy to reach 10 psi with just a little pretension on it

This will explain the tubing blowing off. WOW! was that fun. Peak boost 23.7psi and nothing went wrong with the motor. Glad we are back down in the 11 psi range. But it was fast! Larry you da man. Good experiment. Still can't believe the power!

Glad you're happy with the turbo. Still haven't seen any 0-60, 1/8 or 1/4 mile times. I'm still stock and still able to test whenever Tim and the guys at SFR have a car in to do some testing like that, for back-to-back comparo of '09 stock vs turbo'd on the same road/weather conditions.

Also been into the SFR shop now that they have moved to their new location. VERY nice shop space now. In-floor dyno for tuning, multiple lifts, including a nice, black/black/black Smart sitting there getting what looked to be at least a Stg2 kit (if not more...saw the intercooler and Split Second unit). Super nice guys.

Anyway, your V1 install, although stealth, is lacking a bit in coverage. Sure, you're still getting readings from behind, but you are still masking them a bit behind the plastic. The Speed Detection game is all about who has the first glimpse of the other guy. With the plastic in the way you are giving the peace officer a few more critical seconds of being able to spot you up at speed. And that can be the difference between a ticket and being passed up while he chases a ghost in front of you (who would suspect a Smart of speeding? ). If part of the drive to go to those lengths on the stealth factor were to hide the unit from the eyes of theives while the car is parked, then it is well worth the exchange of seconds out on the road IMO.

There's a 0-60 test with the SFR Smart turbo right here:

The 0-60 times are kinda being held back by the timing of the shifts -- the Smart auto shifter is doing the equivalent of granny shifting through the gears. But, not to worry... Larry is working on a Stage III which should more than compensate for that!

^ That is a video of Larry's car. He's got a stage 2+. I'm looking for a 0-60 video of someone who has a straight stage-2 bolt-on.

I'll try to shoot a video of Tom's car tomorrow when I change out his tranny fluids as well. He's is a straight stage 2 bolt on

What actually shows the MOST impressive feature of the turbo kit actually isn't the 0-60 time.. it's the 0-90 time! It's off the top of my head but... 0-90 in a stock smart takes more then 45 seconds.. at around 45 sounds I'm still at 85 mph or so. From 0-90 in my car it takes around 25 seconds.. however long that youtube video is.. I forgot.

The 0-60 with the stock brabus smart that I took a video of, it was around 14.5 seconds.. compared to 10.5 in mines, the shifts is what kills some of the seconds but that's a whole 4 seconds or a 1/3 quicker.

And keep in mind.. we are talking about a stock engine with 3.. THREE cyl and 1 liter =P... haha

Cheers,
Larry

That's awesome, Larry. Thanks! If you could, can you run Tom's car with a more conservative boost? I don't plan on running crazy boost like you guys
