I'll have to try that... seems like I had once and it didn't work.. but the car may have been locked... if the handle jpaul pointed out works then i don't need a button on the inside.

Whaddya know... that does open the rear hatch when I get out of the car. sometimes. dunno why... but it seems to work about 4 out of 5 times.. and can't figure out why it won't on the fifth. I just turn off the car, get out, and open it... but sometimes it dosen't work and I have to unlock twice with fob or hold button.

I did pull the ESP fuse last night. First thing I noticed was that the ESP light, ABS light, and Brake light were all lit up. Second thing that I noticed was that is seemed stiffer when I shifted it into gear, almost like I had my foot on the brake a little. Checked everything out and it seemed fine, so I took her for a spin without ESP. didn't really notice anything last night, but didn't really come into many situations where it would kick in. Never could get the tires to spin, although they felt as if they could have a couple of times... the car just took off. (Which is odd... because with ESP it would have flashed an reduced the takeoff power a bit.) This morning, however, I hit that really fun s-curve that I like to take too fast. I remember last time going through it and thinking that I was going to lift one of the rear tires off of the ground, and withing milliseconds of that thought ESP kicked in and the car stabilized. didn't reduce the speed much, but leveled the car out. I hit the curve in the same fashion this morning without ESP, didn't get the tire off the ground... but it did get a little squirrelly and the car wobbled a bit. After that I decided to plug the fuse back in. besides.. all the dash lights were annoying, and I didn't really want to lose the ABS.

Just a friendly note; I won't go around pulling fuses. Car manufactures often tie other things into a single fuse and you could be either doing damage to the car, endangering yourself, or both, especially since the ESP system is directly tied into the braking system and the cars computers. ESP-equipped cars have 30 percent fewer fatal crashes and SUV's have even less. Call your dealer or check a wiring diagram to trace what other components are tied into the Smarts ESP system. It's there to enhance your safety and if you were in an accident your insurance company probably would void out your coverage once they learned that the cars ESP system was tampered with. Most new cars this year and next will have ESP included as standard equipment and soon it will be mandated by law. Glad you hooked your fuse back up but for any others considering this you will be shooting yourself in the foot in the long run

Perhaps the 5th time you only had the driver door unlocked. I've noticed that there are two ways to get the back to open via the rear handle:

1) Unlock the entire vehicle, either with a two-time push (separated by 2 seconds) of the unlock button on the key fob, or

2) with the unlock button on the dash. The passenger door will open from outside. Only then will the rear handle work. This method does not squawk the alarm.

I believe that's the design intent, and that's how mine works 100% of the time. If I hit the key fob unlock twice too quickly, it won't unlock the second stage (passenger door) and won't activate the rear handle. Maybe it's preventing an accidental double-click.

If I push my remote unlock once, then pause about a second, it will unlock everything and I won't get a second (annoying) chirp.

oddly, everyone talks about the chirp when locking and such... all I ever get is the lights flash a little. it would be nice if it chirped when I locked it.

I'm thinking the chirp is with the alarm. My orphan doesn't have it either but my car that will be here in a few months will.

See that red button on the key? Go ahead, press it. That'll tell you if you have the alarm.

Red Panic Button

That red button doesnt prove an alarm is present - it acts as a panic button when no alarm is present

I didn't get the alarm; I figure steal it if you really must....

To by pass car alarms and other security features criminals invented car jacking.....

LoJack - I think someone posted on the web were the LoJack device is 'hidden' in the smart..... erm.... that was stupid since now yanking it out and tossing it out the window renders it useless... - loads of money for nothing.... besides the car is small enough how long could it take to find the unit

I'll rely on the mobile locking thingy majig in the key fob and of course the good sense to lock it.....

Side note - did anyone else notice if you unlock the car - but don't open a door - it locks itself after a few minutes

Cheers
