Is it possible to weld the mounting bracket on the bottom side of the intake tube? I think that would present a mostly-uninterrupted and cleaner look and would look better.

...since the heading is "what do you think" I will say I think it looks good..I think it looks as the other ones out there...I think it looks like it will absorb a whole lot of heat in slow moving traffic and it will really get hot as hell when in stopped traffic defeating the purpose of a cold air intake..as one of our fellow members run at the Indianapolis Raceway Park this past summer using something very similar to all the CAI pipes on the market today found out, it will kill performance when just a few degrees of OAT change...his best run was accomplished when the stock set up was used and an after-market filter was in the box...
...and since we are on this subject of CAI I will like to see numbers...I will like to see what the temperature is right outside the intake grill and what is the air temperature right in front of the throttle body on a up to normal operating temperature engine...if nobody has this numbers I will take them from a totally stock Pasion (my bride's car) and one from an slightly modified Brabus (my bride's other car) and post the results in a new thread...and remember that it takes 42.4 BTU's per minute to make 1 horse power (550 ft/lbs per second)*..in other words ..it takes more fuel to heat up cold air...

jetfuel...can you say MPG

*at an specific gravity of 0.71, 5.92 pounds per gallon and approximately 19,000 BTU of energy per pound of fuel burned.

Can I assume that is why I am seeing intake tubes made of silicone? To subdue the effects of heat?

K&N and other oiled type filters are pretty much acknowledged to be junk by now, no? Reference this thread: What is the assessment of the engine air filters that are on the market for the Smart

Dry filter?

I can go ahead and weld the mounting tab towards the bottom of the tube for a cleaner look.

Also, I will find a different filter with an opening on the end for a better shot of cool air.

On the subject of the tube getting hot and the whole thing not working anyway.
Correct me if Im wrong but if the entire engine bay gets heatsoaked to 160 degrees in 15 minutes or so (just guessing). Then any intake tube, weather it is made out of plastic, carbon fiber, steel, or kriptonite will eventually be the same temperature. The only difference will be how long it takes to soak up the heat, but after a short amount of time they will all just be sitting there at the same temperature.

Cold air intakes really do make more power, I am one of the few that has had these cars on a dyno testing different stuff.

The problem with making them out of a different material (at least for me) is expense, It will bring the price back up just to gain a horsepower or two before the car fully warms up.

I suppose one could exhaust wrap it if it were that much of a problem?
