1.5L 95HP Diesel

I am waiting for the 1.5 liter diesel engine with 5-speed manual transmission package to arrive from Europe. It has been in the SmartFour since 2005 and returns a combined city/hwy mileage of 60 MPG. Does anyone have any idea when these engines and transmissions will be offered in the US?

I think I could go for that. TDI version would be nice.

Remember that the now-defunct smart forfour was essentially a Mitsubishi Colt (4-cylinder) with a tridion in the middle. I'm not sure if it even met the EU4 pollution standard (but maybe), and now EU5 is on the close horizon. The US standard is much stricter than EU4 and very close to EU5. The two showstoppers for diesels in the US are the ability to physically carry the significant required equipment (right now limited to aqueous urea injection), and the infrastructure to re-fill the A/U tanks (per EPA, a dealer-only operation). For a smart, that is 1/2 gallon from somewhere per each 10 gallon fill-up (1:20).

Per Jim Parsons (Director of Operations for SMART USA) smart does not plan to bring the diesel into the US, as they would like to move to CLEANER technology including hybrids and full electric.

I'd buy that though...

As per some of my rants about the 4two in another thread, a battery powered 4two would be more likely to find a home in my garage.

I'm sure they would be able to lower the 4two's center line with an electric power train. My one major problem with the 4two set up.

A hybrid seems a bit pointless in a car this size though.

Meh.

If there was a diesel offered, I'd rather see it in the Smart Crosstown ... and, as long as we're wishin', It'd be nice to have 4WD and a few extra inches of lift as well.

I think anyone that wants a diesel should run down to your local VW dealer ( chances are it's closer than the Smart dealer) and buy one of the great new jetta diesels. Oh wait VW doesn't even sell a new diesel in the US. Unless you don't mind waiting about 6 months until they bring out their new one.
