I put this (and most other) problem(s) down to a society of selfishness. People don't think about other people, and our society has bred people to only worry about what's in their own best interests. Why worry about the environment when you won't live to see damage? Why slow down before a red light or drive somewhere close to the speed limit when speeding will get you where you're going 45 seconds earlier? Why use turn signals when YOU already know you're turning or changing lanes?

I can go on and on, but we really are a wasteful, self-centered society. Smarties are a little smarter, and I'm hoping they're a little more conscientious as well. ;)

Kid, you are spot on with that brother man! it is a societal soup of selfishness, sprinkled with a heavy dose of excess materialism.

these are the very same people driving along rambling away on the cell phone in violation of the V&T Law, wordlessly saying to all around them that their petty little phone call is more important than the safety of the other motorists around them.

I could go on and on about this (perhaps you could as well). I certainly feel that the issues are related, that's for sure.

I couldn't agree with your more! When I just read that the EPA gas mileage standards for 2008 are based on 80 mph and acceleration of 8 miles/sec., I realized how we've been slowly brainwashed into driving as fast as possible in the biggest vehicles we can find, and for what? The other day on the Interstate during rush-hour, only 1/500 commuter cars had more than 1 occupant and qualified for the express lane. Sadly, 75% of those single-occupant cars were pick-up trucks, SUVs or very powerful luxury cars. And, for what? We were all doing 5 mph. creeping along for mile after mile. Hopefully, people will wake up in time. I must add that most young drivers (under 25) respond very positively to my smart. It's the middle-age male in an SUV or pick-up who look at the car with complete disdain. It's almost like they're threatened by it. I truly hope you're right that we're ready to be a little less self-centered!
