24 hours from notion to purchase!

The Cash-For-Clunkers program has turned out to be huge benefit for us, getting rid of an old, decrepit Volvo and into a new smart fortwo passion in the Crystal White on the same day.

Just getting used to the odd "automated manual" shifting and the surprisingly peppy get-up-and-go, but my wife and I are loving the new addition so far.

Best purchase decision I've made in years.

I've been here since September and have been wanting a smart since. As I am a teen the 14-18 month wait would put delivery at Christmas or 2010 so I took the Orphan route. If things go right as planned I shall have mine in my garage in 2 weeks from now. I hope to trade 14-18 months for just 11 months.

Welcome to the community! We are now accepting applications for dog walker! (Although you'd have to walk every member's dog at the same time)

In March of this year, I went to smart to look at the cars, test drove one, etc.. The dealer said I wouldn't take delivery until October 2010 !!

I'm a "want it NOW" kinda guy, if I want to buy something, I'm ready right then and there, or I wouldn't be in your showroom, I can't stand wait lists.

In July I went back to the local dealer web site to drool, they now had an inventory of 38 vehicles. My current vehicle, a 2002 PT Cruiser, was about to go belly up on me, my wanting to look at a new car changed to I NEED a new car.

I went back to the dealer, looked at their "orphans" (never knew the term until I signed on here, they refer to them as "stock"...) found one that met all my requirements, except the factory alarm, and drove away in my new smart within 2 hours.

Orphans need loving too, y' know !!

Same same

I just got my Passion, in blue yesterday, the 31st. Traded my 96 dodge van and got $4500.00 Cash for clunkers. They have lots of stock in Illinois' LoeberMotors. Thanks to all the rest of you taxpayers for helping get my balance below 10K!
I love the car and plan on using it for deliveries at my little business so I am looking for additional door and rear panels for advertising.

Neon, Mud Pie, y'all have the orphan option ... as apparently did the OP. I've had my car for more than a year. Orphans weren't the option they are today. Now the selection of orphans is such that you (a) can probably get one, and (b) have its options list be pretty close to what you would've designed for yourself, and (c) without waiting months for the orphan itself. Orphans were so rare when I took delivery that people were actually turning their newly delivered smarts for a profit! Seriously.

So, enjoy the luxury of having the orphan option, and the cash for clunkers thing too.

Don't understand why it is taking so long to order now. I placed my order in January and they tell me it should be delibered in a couple of weeks (mid August).

I know, back in May 08' when we 1st visited the dealer they told us that the Orphan list could go on up to 6 months. Now there's no Orphan list because there's a large stock pile at smart center lincolnwood and at smart center lake bluff so there's enough for everybody!
