Unhappy Additional Key Problems

Hi SCOA members,
We have a 2008 Passion Cabriolet I purchased in Oct 2011 for my wife (anniversary). She's totally in love with this car, and despite it's size I love it also. The problem we're facing now is that when we bought it, it only came with one key. We need an additional key, and after checking with the only Smart Car Center in Las Vegas, I was told an additional key would cost me $375. That's more than my car payments.
Any way, I was wondering if anyone knew how, or where else I can obtain a key for our smart car?

I went through the same thing recently. My Brabus Cabrio only had one remote key, and an aftermarket non-remote key that would work fine, just no remote. I ordered am additional key, and it took a couple of weeks, and about the price that you were quoted including programming.

The big issue is, if something happens to your only remote key, (lost, stolen or damaged), you will also need to replace the computer that operates with the keys, and I have been told that is an additional $1200 + the keys.

Sometimes technology stinks !

I'd (begrudgingly) pony up for #2. I don't know of a true replacement for less and losing the last key will be spendy.

Did you buy from a dealer? Can you go back and say "Where's my key?" and see what happens? I bought used and made them give me the 2nd, but you've had some time pass since you bought.

You should also try calling the locksmiths in the area. Some locksmiths now carry the equipment to code the replacement key fob to an OE set.

Unhappy

Thanks , for your comments. As to your question, the vehicle was purchased at a non-Smart dealership, and we did inquire about an additional key, but the dealership advised that there was only one key turned in when traded. We were also advised that we need to go to the Smart car center to obtain additional keys.
Upon calling them, the receptionist in the parts department advise that they would need my ID, registration for the vehicle (to show it's my car), and that it would cost approx. $375 for a new key, and it would come from europe, and take two weeks.
Since that phone call, I've spoken to one owner (of a smart car) who just recently moved to Las Vegas, who stated he bought his car in California, and when he inquired about a second key the dealer (Smart) just charged him $180. Another owner (via 451 smart fortwo Owners & Enthusiasts) online advise he paid in Conn. at his dealers only $250. As for the remote I can get access to another remote, I just need the key cut, and have Smart program it once I get it.

I have heard prices upwards of $600 for a key, remote, and programming. $375 is not too bad.
