Thanks , for your comments. As to your question, the vehicle was purchased at a non-Smart dealership, and we did inquire about an additional key, but the dealership advised that there was only one key turned in when traded. We were also advised that we need to go to the Smart car center to obtain additional keys.
Upon calling them, the receptionist in the parts department advise that they would need my ID, registration for the vehicle (to show it's my car), and that it would cost approx. $375 for a new key, and it would come from europe, and take two weeks.
Since that phone call, I've spoken to one owner (of a smart car) who just recently moved to Las Vegas, who stated he bought his car in California, and when he inquired about a second key the dealer (Smart) just charged him $180. Another owner (via 451 smart fortwo Owners & Enthusiasts) online advise he paid in Conn. at his dealers only $250. As for the remote I can get access to another remote, I just need the key cut, and have Smart program it once I get it.

Did you buy from a dealer? Can you go back and say "Where's my key?" and see what happens? I bought used and made them give me the 2nd, but you've had some time pass since you bought.
