Last year as soon as I heard about the reservation system I signed up. Once my notification came I started asking friends and family what their opinion is of this car. (I live in metro Detroit.) Well everyone said "NO - don't get that car!" Reasons vary from size, rage against Penske himself, safety, and nerdiness.
This will be a third car for the family since we have two kids and still need to transport them around. My husband drives a Prius, and I have the big SUV for camping and hauling the Scout troop around. I determined though I spend 80% of my driving alone in the car, within a 5 mile radius of the house. Therefore against everyone's advice, I'm still getting the car. I can't wait. Hopefully once it arrives I'll change everyone's mind.
You're not going against all advice. Lot's of folks here believe in the fortwo along with 800,000 owners across the globe. Stick to your guns and enjoy the car! Thanks, Regina
I've been a "car" person since I was 5 years old. Seen many new cars come & go. Always had a passion (no pun intended) for German cars.
I even remember the Yugo when it came here, thought it was cool, but VERY poor quality. The one thing I can say about my Smart, is that it is VERY well constructed for a car for that price. From the overall finish of the paint, quality of bolt & hardware throughout, Interior finishing, Rubber trim, Wheels & tires.
I can go on & on, but let your friends talk now & watch them be jealous later.......
Growing up in Detroit area I always wanted something "different." My first car I bought was a Fiat X19. I loved that car more than anything I've ever driven even with the rust and mechanical problems. (I learned that people called Fiat - Fix It Again Tony - after I bought it.) Therefore I look forward to blazing a new trail again and hopefully passing on my passion for fun cars onto my kids. I'm hoping for delivery end of March but I didn't configure until end of January.
I drive almost 90 miles roundtrip everyday, usually always by myself, all highway. Not exactly the target market. I've had other small cars in the past and I have to say that this one has been the most unique, fun one I've had. Build quality fit and finish are great. I have a friend that has a collection of all the big buck cars - Lambo, Ferrari, and a whole stable of Mercedes. He got in the car and was immediately impressed. He started to point out all of the Mercedes "touches" he saw in the car. If you like to talk to people, this is the car to get - because everyone wants to know all about it. Perfect for running around town, doing errands, etc. My other cars are an Escape Hybrid and an Expedition (also a Scout hauler).

They don't know what they're talking about! Pay attention to some of the owners here and you will begin to see that this car is a diamond in the rough.
I can't tell you how driving and inspecting this car, in and out, has well exceeded my expectations. The only reservation I had before I took delivery was the shifting of the transmission. Once I had some driving experience with it, I soon found that all the hubbub about the transmission was ill-founded ....in either mode it shifts just fine, although different than any transmission I have ever used before....so different is not bad....just different.
Overall, I find the car to be a great ride...fun, certainly fast enough to use anywhere but at Dayton International Speedway, and ...well....just a HOOT to drive!!
My commute and errand running are mostly around town as well so the benefits of the smartie are well utilized.
You will NOT regret your purchasing a smartcar.....
My brother said I'd be smart NOT to buy it. I got one, anyway. No regrets. Now, my friends are saying that I should sell it to make that quick buck. No, not selling. It sure feels like buying that 1984 Macintosh all over again.
Thanks for all this feedback. I have been reading this site a lot convincing myself I'm not crazy for wanting this car. Now I can't wait for delivery. (Of course the multiple inches of snow around here is helping my patience.)
