With 6 days as an owner under my belt, I have had some experiences with the car. Being stopped by people on the way into a restaurant. The "where's the other half?" question. Even when I went shopping for insurance, the owner of the agency came out and asked if he could have a ride. The best however happened last night. I went to the health club and got out of my brabus. I hear "Sir!... Sir!...Sir!.." being yelled at me from across the lot. I look over to see a police officer charging at me with his hand on his holster. He gets up to me and says, "Man, that is a nice looking car. I had to check it out. I saw it the other night and missed you. So tonight I had to catch you before you went in for your work out..." I spent 5 minutes or so going over it with him...
When I was driving from my home in Michigan to Dallas, I had to make a fuel stop in western Tennessee; a little wide-spot-in-the-road called Bucksnort (I kid you not), that was just a Shell station on one side of the road and one of those trucker's CB shops on the other side... So I've pulled up to the pump and am in the process of fueling up, and a lady comes running out of the CB shop and across the road toward the Shell station screaming, "SAHR!! SAHR!!! WOULD YOU MAHND STOPPIN' OVER TA THE SHOP WHEN YER DONE? MAH BOSS IS POWERFUL INTERESTED IN YER LI'L CAR..." That ended up in a nice glass of sweet tea and a half-hour chat with half a dozen really friendly, curious people.
Yeah, don't expect it to end any time soon. I try to allow time for the uncultured locals to process the idea of something that's not got a HEMI in it, and then proceed with the intellectual comments about how it would fit in the back of their truck.
Then of course there is that rare opportunity to sit in traffic next to the OTHER guy in a Smart, and exchange amusing comments through the windows! That's more fun than the red-necks and their comments!!
Yes, the fun never ends. We've had our smart for over 3 years and the questions and comments keep coming. We've had our picture taken on the road by hundreds of cell phone cameras and have gotten very used to smiling and waving as if we are always in a parade! Most quick trips to the store with the smart always get delayed by talking with strangers in parking lots.
"something that's not got a HEMI in it," Uhmm, Dora, actually it does. The smart engine has hemispherical chambers much like the other "hemi". They are just a heck of a lot smaller. So that should make them twice as interested, right?
I had a motorcycle followed me back to work so he could ask about my little car. This was a couple of days ago. It was hot out and he was a heavy set man who was not wearing a shirt. I was returning from lunch when I saw him and noticed he was following me. I talked to him about 5 to 10 minutes.
I had something similar happen last night. The wife and I stopped at the DQ on the way home (parked behind a jacked up Hummer H2 with the plate MOMS H2). Talked to the very inquisitive older lady owner of the H2 about the car while we waited in line.
After we got our treats, we parked in the adjacent grocery store parking lot facing the main road like we usually do. Rolled down the windows, had the stereo playing and were watching the cars drive by. Soon an extended cab, full size, duelly Ford diesel drives by with a couple older guys in it. One guy looked like he was from ZZ Top with the big beard and such. We didn't think much about it since the truck kept going, but within a couple minutes the truck had turned around and come back to park behind us at the grocery store. The driver had gotten out and wanted to know all about the car. Kept saying that he was retired and didn't need the big truck any more and wanted something small and fuel efficient. We had a good little chat.
Unfortunately, I didn't have my Blizzard finished and it was all melted by the time I got back to it. Oh well, another day in the life of a smart owner.

That sounds a lot like me. I sold this Dodge dually and used the money to by my Brabus coupe. Now all four of my cars are two seaters.
Oh; and the *real* crowd-pleaser happens when you have a cabriolet... Just stand there talking about the car and casually mention that, among other virtues, it's the cheapest convertible on the market, then hit the roof-open button on the key and roll back the top without touching the car.
I had a state trooper pull me over to find out what the heck I was driving. It only had the temp plates so he checked it out carefully to see if it was allowed on the road. Now he waves at me all the time.
