Cabrio or Passion

Hi, First post but I have been on the Smart Car mailing list for several years and finally I am thinking about signing up for a 42. Can't decide between the Cabrio or a loaded Passion. Any major things to think about between these two models or just go with the one that I like best?

My wife only drives about 12 miles round trip to work and the 42 would be perfect for her and our around town driving on the weekends.

I will take over her '96 VW Passat TDI, 40 MPG with only 135K miles (boy, buying that was that a stroke of genius ) for my 32 mile, freeway commute.

And my H3 Hummer will rest up for my kayak fishing trips on the weekends.

First I just have to get out and look at one in person.

Wish they would put a diesel in one however.....;)

I bought the Cabrio, but have decided that convertibles and bald heads don't go together. My next one will be a passion with power steering. I like cornering tight (since I can) but it would be easier with p.s..

I have a cabrio and I bought sunscreen and several baseball caps. It's the best car I have ever owned!!! Why, because it's 4EVERY1 which is what my vanity license plate says. Good luck! Regina

i'm with you "spuds".....can't make up my mind. i reserved in March of this year and probably won't be asked to configure until December.

i keep going back and forth on this. you mentioned 'needs' and ours have been changing almost weekly. first, we were going to get a Passion for the wifes business (now she wants something 'bigger' like a Beetle) and so then i'd decided to get it for me to drive back and forth to work. BUT since i'll be driving the Jeep Compass 4X4 during most of the winter, i'm more inclined to get the Cabriolet since it will be used more for spring, summer and fall driving.
on the other hand the wife is not big on 'convertibles'.........

oh well, like i said, i've probably got another 6 months or so to decide and by then, i would have changed my mind 100 times!

good luck with YOUR decision!

We bought the Cabrio and love it. We test drove a Passion with the glass roof on a day when it was 40 degrees. In the short test drive we nearly roasted. Although it has a sunshade, it was still very warm inside. The glass roof does not open. Besides, driving around with the Cabrio's roof down is just too fun!

you dont like having it without power steering.. i test drove one without and i could swear it had it. it was smooth

i ordered a convertible but then realized the difference would be 3300 dollars for a rag top???? thats crazy so i think im going to stick with the passion coupe and then customize a sunroof later on.

I ordered a cabrio, but decided to take the orphan passion I was offered. That was a better choice for us because of how the rear window/hatch works and it saved some $$$. It's also much easier to load and unload things from the back with the passion. The glass panorama roof does put some heat into the car, but the view out is almost as good as a convertible. I think the passion would be a tad safer, however now that summer is here the cabrio would be alot of fun. The grass is always greener....If money is no object I would buy one of each.

I love my Cabrio - of course I live in the mountains in Arizona about 5 miles from the Mexican border and have yet to drive the car with the top closed. I just think if I had gotten an orphan Passion I would have always regretted not getting the Cab. My gut sense is if you're even thinking of getting the Cab you should go for it. If you end up not liking it you can always sell it, probably for at least what you paid for it, and pick up a Passion orphan.
