"Check Engine" light service issue with Lynnfield MA dealer

Anyone else here who got their Smart from Lynnfield MA?

We are really having trouble getting a question about a "check engine light problem" that we had. I already know the error code (P0301- misfire cylinder 1) and possible causes. The engine ran very rough but since is OK (no it wasn't due to an incorrectly tightened gas cover). The light has since gone out but the Scangauge still reports the error code. Since we are 2 hrs N of the dealer we wanted to know if we needed to come in and have the problem checked (for possible faulty O2 sensor/spark plug or wire etc.).

We have called multiple times and we are unable to get through to the only Smart service person who we have been told (by everyone else at the dealership that we have talked to) can answer our question. Everyone pleads ignorance of this problem, although it is certainly known to the forums. We never get the promised call back to us. We are planning on taking the car for a trip to PEI in August but are reluctant to go without an answer. We are getting very frustrated with Lynnfield.

Has anyone else had problems with this dealer for service? We are about to try going to either the Somerville or Latham NY dealer.

I'll let those of you who are waiting for Smarts from this dealership know how this goes. Maybe we should have picked a different one, although the Somerville dealer is also a Herb Chambers dealership.

Meanwhile, we love our "GOTSMRT"

Just to let everyone know, my husband finally got through this morning to the Smart knowledgeable service person at Smart Lynnefield MA. The service-tech works in the Mercedes service area and had never gotten our messages from the Smart Dealership. He was very helpful and talked to my husband at some length. Since the engine light has not reoccurred he said that it might have had something to do with the gas. Evidently some poor quality gas in NE has caused this type of problem in the mercedes cars. He advised that we might stick with Exxon/Mobil. If it happens again, then we should have it looked at. He also said that in the future we could reach him by calling directly to the Mercedes dealership and asking to be transfered to Service. We are pleased and reassured.

There may be nothing wrong with your engine. Make sure when you pump gas you don't top it off too much, because this will caused your engine light to come on almost everytime.

Jazoo,

Thanks for the post. I live in Nashua NH and I reserved my smart a few days ago. I tried Somerville first and they were not that great. I was told that I could test drive a smart any day w/o an appointment. I showed up on Wed. and was told they were all out of demos and to come back tommorow Then was given the run around about going to the Lynnfield dealer.

We took the 20 min drive to Lynnfield and was able to test drive a smart. That night I reserved my smart. Good to know about the service in Lynnfield. Glad it worked out for you.

The Mercedes dealers that sell the smarts over in Britain are notoriously awful, you are treated like second class citizens because you have a smart and not a Merc, so I read this thread with interest.
Now that my smart is out of warranty, I now go to an independant smart specialist for all my servicing and modding needs, as they are not only cheaper, but they actually like smarts and treat you and your car with respect. I have also found they also know more about the smart than the main dealers.
Good luck with your car and happy smarting.

check engine light

My engine light was on- went to the dealer- they found the notorious p0410 code- secondary air valve failure. This is the bosch part that is failing on a lot of smarts. I'm not sure why they have not recalled this- it seems like a common issue. Well, now my Smart is back running like she should.
