Whatever you do. Look for a washable dog bed to put in the back that should help insulate them from the engine heat

Not that I normally bring my dog along but I put insulation under the carpet back there on my car. Acts as a sound/heat insulator. The insulation stuff I got is the same stuff as those foil windshield heat shields. Bought a roll about 50ft long x 4ft wide for $20 at a automotive swap meet then cut to shape. (the excess we didn't use in the smarts go under the carpet in some of our other cars)

There is a German site with a Smart cage. Not sure if it fits the 451's or if you can obtain one in the US. Kley & Partner - City car tools & parts

It looks like it could fit the 451. One might want to put some cushioning down for the canine companions.

A 450 is the original smart
the 451 is the newer version that was imported into the states by smart USA
The Picture above is from a 450 - the older version

Also available for the new 451

Same design is also available for the new 451

BUT, it doesn't mention how to order (or how much)?

The German units are pricey. I was thinking of getting a small wire gate (something like this Midwest Universal Car Barrier, Universal Wire Pet Barrier For Suv S, Vans, Cross-overs: 31-70 W X 31-50 H) and cutting it down.

The only problem is most barriers mount with a press fit floor to ceiling. With the polycarb clear roof, I'm not sure about that. The dedicated unit mounts sideways.
