Don't crack your windshield!!!

I just got my new Passion coupe about three weeks ago. Three days after I got it, I was driving on the freeway and got a very small stone chip that immediately grew into a foot long crack!! The real killer was when I checked with the dealership about a replacement... $1,017.00 installed was the quote.

I think I'll live with the crack for a while....

given the import nature of the smart, it's proportionally-large windscreen, it's lack of aerodynamics, it's short "hood" and it's propensity for attracting debris to the windscreen - it is probably worth obtaining glazing insurance from your insurance provider in the event your state does not already require insurers cover glazing as part of comprehensive.
even if it's worth $100 added to your premiums, it's likely going to be worth it the first time you end up having to replace the windshield.

in time replacement cost may come down, but i would not expect it for the short term.

In NJ, a $50 deductible (the lowest available @NJ Manufacturers Insurance) added $47 to my annual premium.

I had mine fixed with safelite

I can live with that

And there's no way I'll raise my premium just so I can cover my windshield

An insurance company shouldn't raise your premium because of that. It's a no-fault claim, isn't it? It's worth asking your agent. Don't call the claims line... they may immediately start a claim (Progressive did for me, even though we settled cash).

If the crack exceeds a certain length or is in a certain zone, by law you have to have it replaced, not patched. Find out now before you get pulled over for something else and get a surprise that you have to spend $1k in the next 10 days on your own because the insurance won't cover an event that happened a year ago.

The crack laws tend to be in the east where the gestapo overrides common sense. In the west where almost every car has a crack, they couldn't possibly require a new windshield for a simple crack.
