I take it as a compliment when people do this. Maybe I am a bit used to it from having had cars like Triumph Spitfires and such in the past and since they were few and far between attracted a fair amount of attention.

A simple, "Say, I just waxed her - is there something I can answer for you?" seems to work for me. As far as trying to maintain anonymity in a car like this - that is just expecting a bit much...
I agree....The oddity attracted me. Plus I like small cars.
My delsol's tiny, but when I saw the fortwo on the road,
I was hooked.

I just got mine today and so far I have been lucky that everyone has admired mine from afar. Hopefully you won't run into many more like that.

Well, it has been six months since I started this thread. People don't seem to be as freaked out by it anymore. I still get an occasional thumbs up or wave, smiles and finger pointing. Two or three times a week someone will ask me questions in parking lots and at traffic lights. All of that's alright with me. It's down to a simmer now. I Posted this three days after I took possession in July. At that time, it was really crazy. I enjoy the attention, when it isn't so intense. BUT, I'm still not fond of the fondling, and that's eased off too.

"You know, earlier today a guy peed on my car right there"
(Point to where their hand is.)

I agree, I would never touch anyone's car (or pregnant belly!) without permission.

I like the alarm system idea. Try to scare them away, if that doesn't work, the idea of a gun rack in a smart is just funny as h#ll!

I can understand the Cabrio, but fingerprints wipe off, no harm-no foul.

Jamie the parrot gets me enough attention, but he hates people he has bad feelings about.
I haven't seen anything like what you all are describing, I guess the panic button would give me a day's laughs after I get the car.
Maybe I'll use Jamie to guard the smart...

P.S. To get on my bird's good side you'd have to spend some time petting him and giving him some food.

I ask permission now - guess I'll have to do that for my friend's smarts - but the dealership is up for lots of pats.

Lady G
still waiting
I had a couple of people pat me on my stomach and ask 'Twins?'. I just give them a dirty look and tell them I am just fat.

Twice I've had someone try opening the door. Once, when we were at the car show they set off the alarm and once at the parade they opened the door and looked inside.
That's why I keep my car locked even when I'm just running into the convenience store for just a minute. I don't mind people looking one bit, just don't open the door without, at least, checking with me first.
