Engine Malfunction Light Extinguished

After two weeks driving our new smartcar with no problems, the engine malfunction warning light came on. Called 800-smartusa. After telling me to check fuel cap (no help), told me to bring to nearest dealer - 100 miles away! Found this site and a posting to try disconnecting battery cable for 5 minutes. When reconnected, heard clicking sound and the radio came on -- strange since ignition switch was off. Cranked it up and no light nor radio problem. Thanks smartfor2guy.

Great to hear things look clean! I hate seeing any lights, particularly the ones that aren't real.

The clicking is just the speedometer guaranteeing it has a "zero." I hear this often since I've disconnected and reconnected the instrument cluster many, many times.

Hey John
Do you know of any one trying to get some sort of cruise control. I really need it on long runs.

I have an Area451 cruise control which I got from Steven at SmartieParts.

The MDC cruise control is available from Smart Madness in both coupe and cabrio models.

I currently only offer the LED kit for the Area451 but Smart Madness now has the "optional LED" included with each unit though that LED is best installed externally rather than in the instrument cluster because of brightness.

Owners of each unit recommend them; they're both good products.

I love my Area451!

If it happens again, try taking it down to the local AutoZone or any place that offers free code reading. The code could give you an idea of what's going on, and if it's something that needs a part replacement (like a bad O2 sensor) you can be sure the smart service center orders the parts before you go.

Scan Guage for engine light

Woody,
I've has some experience and own a scan guage that connects to the standard CAN OBD connector under the dash beneath the steering wheel. Take it it Autozone who may find a "pending code" generated by a failure which you reset by disconnect the battery. If there is a problem, its sure to manifest itself again.

I'd take it in and have it scanned "before" it happens again. With only two weeks of run time, I cannot imaging an O2 sensor failure... more like a loose connection (ground) or otherwise.

Don't run too long before getting it looked at.

Enjoy!

Brent Wood from Salt Lake City.
