So I reserved a smart on 3/18, and my dealer here came through with an orphan just last weekend! I had to get it, even though it has some stuff on it that I can live without for sure.
Anyway it's a Pure white with black, with A/C ($600, which I wanted), alarm ($160, eeeeh), and the smart radio ($350, which is total crap! As soon as I can, an aftermarket is going in there).
So yeah, whoever ordered this thing from somewhere in NM, you made me get some really overpriced accessories! And yeah they made me buy them. I guess it's the catch for buying an orphan:
Velour mats, $119. Pretty neat. Worth that? Prolly not.
Luggage cover, $250. I like it, it's the most useful accessory here.
Smoker's kit, $99. Gimme a break!!! For an ASHTRAY???
Luggage net, $120. Yes, that's $120 for nylon netting.
Ornamental trays, $99. That's a hundred bucks for form-fitted rubber that fits in the little dash console pockets.
Safety kit, $250. That was for a couple flares and a little First Aid kit. I would have thought the whole kit would fill all those holes in the back hatch, but noooooo.
CD holder, $99. More plastic with little swingout trays. I'll never use 'em.
So yeah, as you can see, happy with the car. The accessories they pushed on me... not so happy about! But then again I have a smart now instead of a year and more from now, so there ya go!
Oh yeah, a couple things:
The engine makes a putt-putting sound, like a distant helicopter somewhere behind me. It's coming from the engine compartment. Do all of yours do that too? Is that normal??
Also, the alarm went off a few times in a row for no reason. Not sure what that was all about but it hasn't done it again. Weird.
Oh yeah, and I got suckered into a 48 mo warranty, the glass etch, and the tire repair plan.
And another thing, that emissions startup whine when you first start it up, its LOUD! WHIRRRRRRRRR!!!!
And yeah the transmission is slower than slow. Someone please come out with an ECU reflash for faster shifting so the car doesn't nosedive between gears! I'll pay for it!
Todd,
You got a smart …. Congrats!!
Your orphan buying info is good for others. Thanks for sharing it.
Goes to say that “get it right” has advantages over “get it right now”.
Anywho … enjoy your new smart.
Dang Todd,
The Dallas SMART center quoted me $139.91 for the luggage cover and $45 for those rubber cubby holes mats. I think you should have told them to keep it and that you'll take the next unaccessorised Pure. Did you want a pure? You'd still probably have gotten one before your reserved one came in. If people on the orphan list wound quit buying the bogus accessories at the dealer prices, maybe they would slow down on putting them on? I know that is how money is made, but enough is enough....
Congrats on your car!
Congratulations. About the alarm. My orphan had the interior sensor installed upside down and it caused the alarm to go off at random times. It was an easy fix at the dealer.

The transmission shift delay will become nearly non-existant after 750 miles of driving. it seems to learn to be faster as it breaks in....
John
congrats! but dayyyyyyaaauuuum! thats a whole lotta dealer addons!
i would have told them to keep all that stuff or just wait for my reservation to come through.
anyways, congrats!
Yeah.. I know it. Well at least I know I got screwed with the accessories!!
I got it anyway though because there was a dude at the dealer when I was there and he was gonna buy it if I hadn't! Glad I did though, it's really neat.

You mean it was detecting things outside the car?
Huh, maybe I will have them check it out. I want them to look at a buzz too. There's a buzzing plastic rattle sound on the passenger side when a strong head-wind comes up.
