I agree, stick it out. I had one of the first reservations back in March of 07. Got tired of waiting so cancelled and bought a Yaris. Once I started seeing smarts on the road, I started kicking myself, HARD! Put another reservation in which I will get in Dec 09. Found an orphan a month ago and it was one of the best purchases I've ever made too. Still keeping the reservation. Trying to make it a two-smart household. Not sure what you are calling a "great rate" but I let the dealer shop it around and ended up with 6.9% through Chase. Approval in less than 15 minutes. Not the best rate I've heard of but the car is worth the extra couple dollars a month, trust me!
That really is bad. I've seen multiple dealers with MULTIPLE orphans that aren't marked up, they're finally willing to sell outside of their region too.
If you already had financing I would check with other dealers, I was just at the Jacksonville, FL dealer yesterday and they said they had 6 orphans sitting on the lot. Seen this with some other dealers too. I bet you could find a car optioned out much like you had ordered if you look and were dedicated to getting one. Sounds like you may have cold feet as well....and that's OK, I'm sure you could duplicate that interest rate with some smooth talking to the bank.
This is by far the dumbest thing I have ever heard! You are going to go 99.9% of the way and then give up? I think you really don't want the car. On the bright side you just made someone on the orphan list happy. I have had my smart since Jan 21 and love it so much I ordered another one. Your loss.
what I did after they emailed me about my smart coming in a month's time: lined up possible financing options, asked the MB their best rate for me, waited for call, got call, got in touch with my financing options, asked MB if they can match my lowest offer, and presto! car out the door next day.
Sooo... I wouldn't let a financing "setback" ruin my dreams!
I was an 1173 and watched this site as dozens of fellow 1173ers received delivery of their smart while I waited. I got pretty close to Stacy at Smart Center Laguna and was calling her twice a week. The frustration was horrible. She had similar stories and excuses but as I look back now I know she had little control of what was on that truck. I waited a bit longer than most others but I got the car and I am so glad I stayed patient.
I agree with flywithsean that you may not really want the car. If that's so, then walk away, but if you really want the smart don't let these things make you give up. That's just crazy.
the AGONY of defeat~!
Sounds like you've been put through the hoops and you have my sympathy.
Take a chill pill, a mini-vacation, two day binge, whatever - then revisit your decision. You've come this far - don't give up now~!
Holiday stress causes us to make rash decisions. You waited 12+ months for a car and will cancel it because it's delayed by a few days? You still have 30 days to pick it up once it's at the dealer, so don't get your hopes up until they call you and say it's ready. I was shopping for Toyotas the week before I got the final "it's definitely here" call, just getting ready. I was stressed and needed a car right then (my Grand Am was acting up again after $1,000 in repairs), and almost picked up a junker just to get to work reliably. Glad I waited. The Smart is unique and helped me break out of my shell. If it's just a car to you, don't wait a year - go for whatever's on a lot. If it's unique and you really want it, wait a year or two, even buying another junker for that year if you need to.
Maybe you can call the dealer and claim temporary insanity due to holiday stress? Or, for a laugh, buy the car you reserved once it's released as an orphan.
Once you drive your Smart off the lot there is no way to wipe that grin off your face. It's worth the hassle. 20,000 (and counting) smiling people can't all be crazy
You sound like my 3 year old having a temper tantrum when things don't go his way! Take a deep breath and roll with the flow. You will be better off in the end.
