I agree with the original poster. I was very surprised at how it drove, and not just the way the transmission felt, but how close to the ground it felt and the really stiff suspension. I felt every bump and pebble amplified - nothing like my everyday car. Of course, it didn't help that the dealer is in a run down pot holed area near a dump outside of Boston. So it was pigeons and potholes everywhere - not fun.
I would have preferred to test drive it on a country road with hills and curves (& smooth pavement).
I was also surprised how heavy it felt. In spite of my surprise in the handling, I was impressed with it's sturdiness. I don't know what I expected - certainly not a volkswagon bug but something more like a small car. The Smart car rides like a jeep or dune buggy.
I still want one. I think it's just the kind of car you have to get used to driving because it's so different than anything else.
