First Tap Tap Noise Then Check Light On

SCARY !!!

FIRST a tap tap tap noise for several days,
then check engine light comes on and stays on!

I did the gas cap thing and that was not it.
(Autozone tested and turned up code 410)

720 miles on premium (93) gas with tank down to two bars.
Noise is not NORMAL

Any Tech's in here? Please Help my poor baby!

You really need to buy a Scan gague 2 for your car. It is easy to install and would tell you your error code. Search the error code on the net to see how important it is and then call your dealer. Did you check your engine oil, is it full?

Oil checked every day before car is taken out of the garage.

Not burned a drop in 700+ miles. I just filled the tank and got 41.69 mpg. Some road at 60 mpg and mostly city and sub. areas.

Light still on and tap still there !

Called dealer, they will pick car up for the 160 mile trip back to there shop.

Now what do I do about the 5 years I aged yesterday???

Is it definitely the Check Engine light and not the ABS light that is on?

The tapping could have been the ABS system performing a self-test then failing - causing the light.

I had this happen the other day at about the same mileage (the light, but not the tapping noise). I drove it to the dealer and waited just a half hour while they ran the diagnostics and changed a valve. It was a PO410 code. This has been happening to lots of people.

P0410 is a common error code that a lot of smart car owners are experiencing. Its error code means Secondary Air Injection Sytem Malfunction. I too had that error code at around 220 miles only and I took it to my dealer and they fixed it by replacing a valve. Check this thread out http://www.smartcarofamerica.com/for...ine-light.html. The gas cap trick would not work with this error. The tapping sound though imo (speaking of my experience) is not related to the error code P0410. I think that is a totally different issue that needs to be looked into and investigated by the dealer. Wishing you luck and hoping that all will turn out okay with your smartie.
