First time I washed the car.

Hello everyone,

Ok this is going to sound like a silly question but I'm gonna ask it anyway.

I've had my Smart Car for 2 weeks now and decided to take it to the carwash for the first time so that it could look brand spanking new.

When I took it to the carwash I thought I was going to be able to sit inside and let the carwash do it's thing but it turned out to be one of those carwashes where you get out and the carwashes thru the machine by itself.

I told the guy who works there " No the doors automatically lock after about a minute. You have to sit inside and go thru the car wash or else I won't be able to get back in my car because the doors will have locked with the keys still inside."

He was nice and sat inside the car and went thru the wash.

Now I know that the doors automatically lock if you forget to lock them when you park the car but would that happen in a carwash even if the car is moving at a snails pace?? I don't know. I just know that I didn't want to take a chance on that happening.

Does anyone know?? I mean I can always call the Smart dealer tomorrow but I figure let me see if anyone here would know.

Thanks

I use a car wash like that... but they let you sit in the car as it goes thru.

with so many cars today that auto lock... i would think the car wash thing must not be a problem..

I think that the car has to go above a certain speed for the locks to engage... might not do it at all if the engine is not running...

but to be safe... bring along the extra key

My sister said that same thing.

"Next time Baby bring the extra key".

Thanks TV Engineer

I send my smart through that same kind of car wash all the time. I don't think the doors automatically lock after a certain amount of time, I think it is when it hits a certain speed (I want to say that 8mph is when it locks). I could swear thats what the salesman at the smart center told me. I have never had an issue sending it through the car wash, so you should be good to go.

You may also be confusing the issue with another feature.

If you lock your doors from the key fob, and later unlock them from the fob but don't open the doors, it wil auto lock after a couple of min realizing you didn't realy meen to unlock them

I do know the auto lock is triggered at 5 mph. I also know it can be turned off. Look here Evilution - Smart Car Encyclopaedia Love that site.

Turning Drive Lock On And Off

On

  • Press and hold the lock button on the centre console.
  • Press the lock button on the remote.

    Off
  • Press and hold the lock button on the centre console.
  • Press the unlock button on the remote

Auto locking won't occur if you're parked and just get out of the car with the key in your hand. The car has to be moving around 8-10 mph. OR if you unlock it with the key fob and DON'T open a door within a minute, it'll lock. Not to worry at the car wash about getting out and leaving it there.
Hey, but if you're really worried, leave the window open . . . 8=)
