Fuel Consumption - UK diesel

I bought a diesel 42 in london and im only getting 40 mpg instead of 80+ as smart claim. The dealer says it needs running in. Anyone else have this problem?

Peter, 99.9% of the owners on this forum have petrol smarts, not diesel.

You should try www.clubsmartcar.com which is a mostly Canadian site with lots of diesel owners.

If I recall correctly, smart does not claim 80+ MPG for the diesel. 40 MPG Imperial gallons is not bad. Depends on the type of driving you do.

Dave, hard as it is to believe, the UK smart diesel is claimed to get 80+ mpg - pretty lofty goal.

Yup, I see 3.3 liters per 100 km, equating to 85 miles per Imperial gallon. Hard to believe, but….

Anyway, a good engine run-in should improve things. M-B says the OM660 diesel should go for an initial 20,000 km on a M-B Sheet 225.10 “Erstbetriebsmotorenöle” (break-in oil) - currently, Fuchs Titan EM 530 DC or Shell Helix Ultra DC.

Regarding break-in, our U.S. 999cc gassers have an EPA combined estimate of 37 MPG (US gallons). I began with 29 MPG! The combined MPG increased to 36 by 1,500 miles with a good, somewhat agressive break-in, and now at a year and 7,200 miles it is about 41 MPG combined - a 40% increase from delivery.

We only get 61 mp imperial gallon. I don't think that's too bad as I live on the North Shore of Vancouver so there's a lot of hill climbing involved plus occasionally driving at 120kph plus really goes thorough the fuel which is B50 biodiesel.

I found that there are incremental performance "steps" as you put more miles on the car. You will also learn to drive your CDi more smoothly and efficiently. There is truth to the running-in idea.

At nearly 50,000 miles, my diesel's "lifetime" average is about 60mpg. A blend of perhaps 50 in the city and 85 on the highway.

* I'm talking Imperial gallons.

Also I think Canadian CDI smarts are the 450 model, I do not think the 451 is sold with CDI in Canada. Fuel efficiency may vary between models.
What year is your smart peterluckhille?

True, that. No more smart diesels coming to North America in the foreseeable near future.
