Here's my two cents regarding fuel efficiency:
1. Be in a good mood. If you're calm, oriented, and alert, your speed will fluctuate less, thus decreasing consumption.
2. Don't be in a hurry. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. If you're running late, you're gonna run a red light at 15 over the speed limit then slam your brakes on the other side of the intersection just to save 30 seconds of waiting for the next green. Doesn't help your cause.
3. Premium fuel is a must. Even in the Wife's Jeep, we use premium, and my own experience shows anywhere from 2 to 5 mpg of a difference. May or may not be cost effective, but you spend less time diverted to a gas station.
4. Light acceleration, speed limit. These are a beaten, dead horse.
5. Anticipation. If you're a fair distance from a green light in a city, you're probably not gonna make it, so you might as well coast if you know it's gonna turn red. Coasting will cause the mixture to lean out, and the engine's inertial dampening will help you decelerate.
6. Clean air filter, proper tire inflation. More from a dead horse.
7. Good oil. Don't buy the "99 cent special" motor oil from walmart. Use a synthetic that has been independently tested for high film strength. These oils are slicker, with smaller molecules, granting greater lubrication with less parasitic drag.
8. Keep it clean. May sound silly, but a dirt covered vehicle is less aerodynamic, which can account for a lot.
There's a couple more I've tinkered with, but unless you've studied Organic Chemistry, I'd probably lead you astray. I hope these helped!
