Picked up Maxwell 7-17-08. Registration #1350 Never have seen the 451 in person until then. Saw them in Rome in 2002 and loved them then. First time I have driven one was on the way home from the dealer in Louisville.
What everyone says about the questions and looks is true. People pulling up next to us on the freeway giving the thumbs up. Every stop gathers a crowd. Went to a music show and parked right out front. Seems the most curious were older people. Let a few old ladies sit in it. They were all amazed at the room and the fact you don't have to climb down into it. When you explain how safe it is they are really impressed.
After reading all the hubub about the transmission I was curious about it's performance. If you understand what is going on and what the computer is actually doing, the transmission's operation is absolutely amazing.
Put gas in it for the first time and calculated 41 mpg. I expect it to only improve with some break-in miles.
Overall the fit and finish is impressive. I have read complaints here about it's harsh ride. I guess it's what you compare it to. I sold my 18 year old GEO metro that just turned 200K miles and the smart is like a cadillac compared to that. The smart doesn't feel like a small car when you drive it in my opinion. After reading the manual about the stability program, brake assist, ABS and of course the transmission, this is an amazingly smart car.
Buying a car sight unseen leaves the possiblity of disappointment. In this case I am extremely pleased with the smart. The wife says there may be a domestic call to the house for fighting over who gets to drive it. Since the weather is nice and I am still riding the motorcycle to work, we are both getting 40+ mpg and that sure helps the budget.
We named it Maxwell not only for the obvious reason, but to match the other Max in the family. The smart is red w/black and my Yamaha Vmax is red and black. The smart is 1L, the Vmax 1.2L. The smart has about 70 h.p., the Vmax 145 h.p. Pulled up next to my wife on the way home one day while she was in the smart and I was on the Vmax, we raced. The Vmax does 0-60 in less than 3 sec. The smart does 0-60.
Only one complaint. Paying extra for "metallic" red and there ain't no metallic at all in it.
