Well, I've been following this smart fortwo thing since early March 2007. I started to do the reservation about 3 times but decided not to. I wanted to wait for the Road Show that came through my area.
I missed the one in Germantown MD. but me & the wife went to the road show in Baltimore MD.. After a quickie ride around the block I still had a bit of reservations about the car.
Skip forward to the Saturday, January 19th when our local Smart dealer received some demo cars. I was really interested in how it would handle the highway since we drive I-270 15 miles to the 495 "beltway" around washington D.C. where we do another 15 miles to get to work. Our average commute is about 32 miles one way. Aver speed ranges from 5 mph to about 75 mph so I figure the smart will handle that well. I just needed to see how well it accelerated.
We took the car out, drove it a couple of miles on the interstate, came back, told the sales rep thanks alot & we will see you in 2009. We went home and put the $99 reservation down on it that day!
We are hoping sometime in 2009 (got to pay off the kids college graduation car first).
Oh, BTW, our "Other" car that we will not be getting rid of is a 2007 Honda Fit Sport that we bought in June of 2007. I average about 37 mpg overall with it. I'm thinking that after breakin the smart should get mid 40's on my commute (you really can't trust those EPA gas milage figures!)
Oh hey, a little demographics, I'm 52, the wife is 48, she is a computer programmer while I am a web developer. I'm a car guy from way back (LOVE those Big Block Chevies) and actually have a 58 Chevrolet Bel Air 2 dr sitting in a storage shed waiting for money & time to rebuild the 396 big block.
So we are excited about the smart and are hoping for some good mpg numbers from it.
Thanks for reading!
