Hi everyone. I'm new to this site but am hoping to get some help with a decision I'm trying to make. I currently have a '07 Yaris Hatchback but am seriously considering selling that for the Smart. Am I smart to do this or will I regret it? Currently I get about 27-28 mpg city driving. (I might get more if I wasn't such a lead foot most of the time...I do like to drive faster then I should!) Haven't been able to test the highway mpg as I don't drive out of town... no cruise control. My Yaris doesn't really have enough leg room for me to relax my leg for a long, out of town, drive. I like the extra leg room in the Smart and probably wouldn't get foot cramps in that. I also like the idea that I would probably get better gas mileage with the Smart. But I'm also concerned on the get-up-and-go between the two. I've test driven the Smart but you know how it is on a test, you don't really get the true feel of the car. I'm on the list but am really torn between the two. Any suggestions out there, especially from those who currently have the Smart? Thanks for your help!
thanks trzemyk! my main concern.... which would hold up the longest with the least amount of repairs? i'm so confused. i love the smart but my yaris is paid off. main fear... i'd sell my yaris, buy the smart and the smart would break down.
Well, as excited we all are about the smart, I would say most people would encourage you to do so. The Yaris is a pretty high demand car right now as well, so you could probably get a good price for it if you sold it on your own. Do you find yourself ever using the back seat or folding down the back seat to pack it to the gills? If not, the smart would most likely work for you.
Another thing to think of... I bought a grill last summer, and I couldn't fit it in the trunk OR backseat of my Maxima simply because the openings weren't big enough. so I had to borrow my mom's CRV. I could have fit it in the smart with the tailgate down using a couple bungee cords or some rope. Something to compare between the Yaris and the smart. The Yaris seems to have a funky shape to the rear. I haven't gotten up-close-and-personal with a Yaris yet, but I would imagine that the shape of the hatch on the Yaris would limit the size of bulky items loaded into it. The smart is more flexible than some people think.
It's really a personal choice. If you like the styling, great. If you like the way it drives, great! If you like the "green" things about it (uses less materials to build, uses less gas, is 95% recycleable, the entire manufacturing process is one of the most Earth friendly... ever), then great! I happen to like the latter things about it the best, but think it looks great and is fun to drive to boot.
If it makes financial sense, and you'll get enjoyment out of owning a smart, then I'd say go for it! It's really a great machine that will become part of your family.

Emotions: No contest between the two - smart wins!
Overall cost: Sell the Yaris now while you can. smart can be driven for a couple of years with little or no depreciation. - smart wins!
Keeping a low profile: If you are introverted and hate when being the center of attention - Yaris wins!

The Yaris appears to be one of the most reliable cars on the planet. I think it would be safe to say that the Yaris would last longer. But, the smart's probably not as bad as VW's and people drive VW's and love them.
The reliability was my concern, too. I have a 1995 Maxima with 180000 miles on it, and it's very reliable. I'm affraid of buying a new car, having a car payment, and ending up in the shop with costly repairs. But, it's got a warranty for a couple years, and I'll just see how it does and sell it if it becomes too much of an issue. I'm used to Japanese cars that just don't break. But I'm willing to have a little patience for this little guy.
However, if you like the smart and you'll be more comfortable in it and you can afford it, go for it! You can always sell the smart and get another Yaris if you don't.
thanks minismart. i have used the back seat of my yaris but mainly when i drive at lunchtime at work. i usually take 2 others with me. so with the smart that would decrease to 1 but that parts okay. i really haven't tried to fix anything big into the yaris so that hasn't been much of a problem either. i take it you own a smart? if so, are you getting used to the shifting aspects of it? i think my main concern is having to drive so far to get the oil changed or the normal warranty stuff you have to do to keep the warranty in place. i was told by the dealer that only a smart mechanic could work on it. any issues there for you?

if you are only looking at a Smart to improve your mileage and do in fact drive lead-footed, you might be disappointed. there are several posters on here who seem to be in a contest to disprove the estimates stated on the window. i said from day one that they would be accurate. my experience says the window numbers are pretty dang close to reality. i only drive it in the city with very little highway driving. my first tank, running the revs a little higher than the "shift now" arrow resulted in around 28mpg. my second tank, while always attempting to shift at the recommended time ("shift now") arrow, has resulted in around 32mpg and the window sticker states 33. i'm fine with the mileage, i didn't expect it to be any better than advertised and for me, it has not been. plus, it gets 3X the mpg of my other car.
I think it might take a long time to get a smart unless you want to keep bugging your dealer for someone's cancellation (we call those cars "orphans"). You can get on the reservation list for $99 and you would have many months before you would have to make a final decision and in the meantime you still have your Yaris to play with (go test drive the Smart as much as you can). I have a new Smart and I really do enjoy it. but storage space is sparse. The car has pretty good get-up and go once you get the hang of the transmission (which is really easy). Hard for me not to favor the Smart because it is just so much more fun to drive than anything I have ever tried before (and I have owned many many different kinds of cars). If you can financially afford to switch cars, and don't need much storage space, I would do it.
being completely neutral, i would say you have to look at a couple issues.
first, what is your financial situation with the Yaris....do you owe money on it? since you just bought it, and the current market is really a 'buyers' market, you'll probably LOSE your A$$. do you really want, or can you afford, to do that?
second, does the Yaris fit YOUR needs....does it have enough leg room for YOU and do YOU like it? Toyota makes an excellent vehicle with a great reputation for quality and reliability.
so, if the Yaris doesn't meet your needs AND you're not going to take a beating on trade-in value AND you are having the same 'love affair' with the Smart that many seem to have, then GO FOR IT! just don't buy the Smart, or any thing for that matter, unless you are in a 'smart' position to do so! ;)
