Hi to all. This is my first time, so not sure yet what I'm doing. I got my Smart Passion last May ('07) and am trying to locate service centers. Not that it needs anything - have about 8,400 miles on it and have only had one oil change in Washington. Any ideas where to go in this neck of the woods? I'm in Newport on the Oregon Coast.

yes. Canada. it's a different car then what we are getting. i don't believe the dealers in the US will be authorized to repair those cars buy you would need to check with them.

Hi bmx - am I the only woman who has a smartie on this site?? Obviously I have a lot to learn that my dealer didn't tell me. I hope you guys can help educate me. I had researched before buying, but wasn't told, nor did I find anything about not being able to get my car serviced. The dealer gave me some names in Oregon - will call tomorrow - but I've called the new Smart dealer in Portland, and a couple of MB dealerships and a VW dealership (dealer told me "any place that works on German cars will serviced." Ha! Now what do I do? If the one place where I currently had oil changes in Washington goes out of business, Canada is my only option?? I also see there is conflicting info about what kind of gas. Dealer told me "regular" is fine. I've used both regular and plus, never premium.....???

actually there are lots-o-ladies on this site.
here's the thing. you have a different car than what we all have. you have a different motor than we have. now it is true that many German car service centers MAY be able to service your car, it's unlikely that they will have the parts and would probably need to order them (if they can).
the car we are getting requires Premium fuel but it is a different motor than what you have (different transmission too i think). you probably have the motor that is made by MB, whereas our is made by Mitsubishi so yours may not require the same octane as ours. did you buy the car new or used?
Unfortunately, the smart center Portland will not be servicing grey-market smarts because of the different specifications between the grey-market and US-spec smarts. To my understanding, many of the smart centers across the country are choosing not to service grey-market for that same reason.
For an authorized smart service center, you would need to travel to Canada at this point, or you can trust the service of your vehicle to a non-smart-certified private mechanic.
We have found that many customers who purchased from grey-market dealers were given incorrect or vague information in order to land a sale. Sad, but true.
Maybe you'll wanna put in reservation for a US-spec smart that way by the time your grey-market smart may need servicing, your US smart may be here. www.smartcenterportland.com
You can order parts online. Find yourself a local mechanic who is a smart fan.
It really can't be that tough. Call around to local garages, tell them you can provide the parts if they can do the work.
The early versions, like yours, required the oil to be sucked out of the dipstick tube. This required a vacuum-type fluid evacuator. Most "real" shops have them. SnapOn and Matco tool trucks sell them everywhere.
Any reputable shop should be able to do oil changes, air filters, plugs, tire and brake work...IF...you can help them find the parts.
Good luck.
If you were in GA, I'd LOVE to work on your car...
Hi, Michael in Portland here, I have other posts about hacking the Fortwo elsewhere. Glad I didn't get the gray-market model; had no idea about the hassle those buyers have.
(Included in that list: the City of Portland, who bought three last year at $25 grand each, to "set an example" for the rest. Too bad they didn't have any patience or foresight; that same $75 grand could have bought six of them. But Portland is known for dumb wastes of taxpayer money. It's cool to see them on the roads, but now I know what a mistake they made.)
I didn't even know about this community until I took delivery of the 3rd one in Portland, so I don't even know what my reservation number was.
I guess we need a Portland-specific group so we can all meet at restaurants and other places and fill the lots with our Smarts.
