Hi from South Carolina

I just bought a used 2008 Passion in Jan.2009 It has 11,000 miles on it and runs great. Still getting used to it especially when it shifts ( I think it's getting used to me also)
It has a lot of personality and I meet alot of people (all asking questions about the car. I get a lot of: "is that an electric car?")
its great to know there is a Smart community available if I need some answers. Thanx

Greetings, Lilbit2! You'll find a great deal of information here (some of it you need to be cautious of, but most is of value). Being a fellow SC-er, you may want to check out the smart CARolinas site as well. We have a monthly get-together, and I believe this Saturday is the day. Up near Lake Norman.

In the mean time, check around (we also have a Carolinas forum on this wonderful site!). And have fun!

I did not purchase an extended warranty for my Smart, I started to think about getting one, checked it out at my bank but they said the car didn't qualify for an extended warranty. Does SMART have one? If so, do a lot of owners buy one?

Most (I assume here) of the dealerships offer an extended warranty. From the various posts over the last year, the warranty offered varies with the dealer. As to how many take it - that, too is a mixed bag of answers - some decrying it as a major rip-off, others won't do without it. I would advise that you check out anything offered you - ask questions like:

1. Who does the warranty work? (Dealer or Joe's Garage)
2. How is it applied (do you pay up front, and get re-imbursed, etc.)
3. What's the cost gradient? (+1 yr = x, +2 yr = 3x, that sort of thing)

If you are convinced it is worthwhile, and your budget will support it - why not?
