If I ordered TODAY.. how long a wait?

My car comes off lease in May 2010... Is it still a year wait from time of order? Just planning ahead!

No, not really. Most, if not ALL smart centers have cars on hand for immediate sale.

I'm only guessing, but I would say that when your lease is up, you should have no problem locating the smart of your choice.

BUT if you want to place a reservation and plop down your $99, then you might want to do it sometime in the next couple months. If you find one on the lot, you can always cancel your reservation and get your $99 back.

Different Smart Centers may have different lead times. See if someone from the Smart Center you would be taking delivery from has better information.

There are now no wait times. The dealer where I purchased mine, Herb Chambers SmartCenterBoston has 20 or 30 in stock. I drove my Smart to Camden NJ last weekend and by coincidence the hotel I was staying at was next to the Mercedes/Smart dealer. He at at least 50 on his lot. Many colors, many models.

Last year when gas was $4.50 a gallon, many people put down their $99, and now that gas is down to half that, many of these people are electing not to take delivery.

Of course if you wanted to custom order one, then I understand that the wait time is about 6 months.

I waited a year but that was then (March 2007-May 2008). Now you can just go the dealership and grab an orphan unless you want a custom made car.

Yes, it's a LOT shorter than it used to be apparently!

I reserved my smartie on 2-6-09, confirmed it two days later, and expected a delivery date of October through December 09 based on what others have said about the wait time in the past.

It's now May 09 and I just got the call from the dealership that my ordered smart is on the lot waiting my pickup.

Too bad I already bought an orphan with the exact color and specs that I wanted in March, but now there's at least one other orphan for a future smart owner waiting!

That puts the Reservation to Delivery date at about 3 1/2 months!

I was recently at the Chandler, Arizona Smart Center... and they had at least a dozen shiny new Smarts out on the lot. I'm thinkin folks could just walk in and then drive away. Inventory is not the issue it was this time a year ago. Just like any other car model. Sales are down. Inventory is UP. Good news for the buyer with cash.
