The 6 month amounts Allstate and safeco wanted were insane..
Allstate, I've been with for 4 years and the agent knows me from when I was about 4...
I know being A single male under the age of 25 (i'm 24), or "high risk", with a clean driving record since i was 18, but these rates are freggin crazy.
$1950 Allstate
$1550 Safeco

Geico.. $756

All same coverage limits and such entered to each one. Sad. But you can guess who I went with.

I don't know about that. My insurance on my Mercedes(a lot more than 2x price of the honda) is cheaper than my Honda Odyssey. Identical coverage and everything. Go figure.

I stopped by my State Farm agent and checked on the insurance rates for the 2009 Brabus Cabrio I should take delivery on in April. For Michigan (in an outlying county of Detroit - the rates vary depending upon how close you are to the city) with 100/300/100, rental, towing, $500 ded., $100 ded collision - multicar discount, accident/ticket free & no licensed driver under 25 in the household -- I was quoted at $360 for 6 months. Please note both primary drivers are over 50 and this also includes the factory installed anti-theft system, also my time in service with State Farm exceeds 20 years)

I just called my insurance agent, and found out that our rates are going to go UP by $13/month compared to the Beetle. That was certainly unexpected! I guess I was hoping that a cheaper car would also be cheaper to insure. She said that nobody has asked for a quote on a smart yet (she didn't even know what it was), so she thinks the rates could go down once they have more data. Oh well, probably not a deal breaker, but we were certainly hoping for different news! I've been thinking about shopping around for insurance anyway, so perhaps this is the push I needed (currently we are with Allstate).

At any rate, hopefully we'll be part of the smart family come Saturday!

Doug

One thing to remember in all of this is that the 2004 Beetle is valued by KBB well under $10K. A new smart should be more expensive. Now compare a new Beetle to a new smart and the Beetle should cost more.

Insurance is very strange. I used to have 3 cars(ALL at the same time) - 96 Nissan SUV, 2000 Honda Minivan and 2007 MB SUV. The most expensive one to insurance is the 97 Nissan follow by the Honda and then the MB. I figure that the 96 Nissan is not as safe as other 2 and thief steals it for parts. The Honda Minivan doesn't have any alarm and tracking system like the MB.
I checked with my insurance for a smart fortwo coupe awhile back. It is about $216/6 months. Now I need a quote for a 2009 smart fortwo BRABUS cabrio.

I checked with my Liberty Mutual agent today and she quoted me $648 /yr. This is just slightly more than what I'm paying for my 94 Ford Ranger.

Our '09 cabrio was $7 more (6-months) than our '99 Beetle and that included lower deductibles on the '09. This is with State Farm. $240/6-months

On my 95 sable I was paying 250 for basic stuff (just enough to stay on the road) for a year. Now with full coverage I am paying $1000 per year with AAA. Michigan pretty expensive for insurance. So I guess I cant complain to much.

We both have good driving record, no tickets or accidents, I'm over 50, had to get coverage quick, as my car was here, so didn't have time to shop around. My agent at Farm Bureau Insurance wrote me 6 mo for $397, Same coverage as our 2006 Mini S (performance sport) and my 2008 Tacoma double cab 4x4, about a 60% higher price. I ask why it was so high, he told me there was no crash record, or repair records since it was such a new car, and since there are only a few in the US no parts will be available. I printed off all the Insurance information I could find here on SCOA, and a nice pamphlet from SCI, which I gave him he was taking it up with his Regional manager. He told me, that anytime he questions something the regional says give me proof. He told me that the information I gave him was the kind of proof he needed. He also said he would be contacting me again to let me know of any changes or progress.
Thanks to SCOA I might have enlightened a Insurance company.
