Got my second email from the Atlanta smart dealer today!
The heart of this email is as follows ...
-----------
"I just received some great news from the Smart Car Headquarters. The status of your Smart Car has been upgraded to Status "1". That may not mean much to you at the moment, but for me it's very exciting. That means your vehicle is now in the Distributor's Stock. The car will arrive in 1 day to 1week. I will call and send you an email as soon as the car arrives. Please let us know if you are still interested in obtaining the vehicle."
-----------
I've been upgraded from a 'D' to a '1' ... and, the car will arrive within a WEEK! How long will it be between the time it arrives at the dealer, and I can take delivery? I guess it's time to stop by and have a talk with my CU.
Oh, my girlfriend has decided the blue/silver cabrio should be named Smurf. We'll see if that feels right once I get it home.
How long ago did you reserve your car? How many months did you wait? I'm interested and just trying to figure if the wait is worth it.
Thanks.
I reserved 5/22/2007. If delivery is within days, that makes my wait time about 13.5 months. But, it appears the wait time for new reservations could approach two years. If you reserve now you will be waiting for the 2010 model. I'm very interested in options which may be made available by 2010 (cruise control?) and might soon put down a deposit on one.
If you're in more of a hurry, I suggest you put in your reservation and then get on an orphan list.
I don't know how close you are to your dealer (does your transporter work?), but I would advise that you get ahold of the manager as they will have much better information that whoever you might find answers the telephone. He/she will, at this point, know just about to the day when the car will arrive. Again, if you talk to the manager, you should be able to get him to have it ready within 3 days of when it arrives. That's what we did after the salesperson at the dealership said in a week when the car was already there. We've found that you want to be very friendly to all of the people who smile at you and bound over to ask questions when you stop - kind of fun. Have a great time with it....
According to MapQuest:
Total Estimated Time: 5.0 hours 20 minutes Total Estimated Distance: 298.80 miles
That's one way. It's a two day trip. My transporter is on the blink.
Thanks for the advice, I'll try to call tomorrow. The email is from a person who's title is given as "Smart Car Client Care Specialist" ... and, I take it from what you are saying that this is not the person I want to speak with?

My reservation was on May 24th, 2007. DDE for me is November 2008. I think you're right about reserving a 2010 or 2011 model. Oh well, maybe by then they'll get their production act together for fuel cell Smarts. Yep, both cruise control and remote start would be on my wish list. Can always hope with long delivery times like these. Must be a French/German thing.
"Number 1" whats going to be next roman numerral VI ?! What ever it's all good. I'm right behind you @ res#1237. Yesterday I got the 30 day status "D" e mail. Today is day 405.
Update 7/17/08 day 421 and now I'm #1 !!!

Just a reminder from an earlier post by a dealership (don't remember which one...!):
Quote:
Once smart 1 has released the information to us, we review each name (and VIN# if available) against the production schedule. Customers are then notified of the status of their car in the following sequence:
C = In production [if there is a VIN# the vehicle is 30-45 days out from port. If not, 45-60 days out]
D = Shipped [this indicates the release of the vehicle to the shipping company in France- 15-30 days out form port]
1= In Port [this indicates that the vehicle has arrived in the US but has not had the final inspection completed and has not yet been released to ground transportation for delivery to the dealer- 10-15 days out]
5 = In Route [vehicle is released to ground transportation- 7-10 days out]
In stock= It is here! [PDI is started- 3-5 days to deliver]
This system began in late February and is supposed to continue as vehicles are added to the production schedule. It is true that smart 1 has limited information, and because of initial information flow issues, smart USA has done the right thing and passed accountability and responsibility to the dealer to manage contacts. I am quite sure what you will find is a lot less aggravation with regards to available information now that the smart centers are involved. Hope this helps. Again, I apologize for the delay in responding.
