I was just about to do it too. Tough economic times call for drastic measures, and I can't tell you how many time when the budget was tight I thought "That's it, I'm cashing in my chips and getting my hundred bucks back and stepping 'out of line!'" At the very least, I had clearly grown indifferent, disheartened, and blase about the whole "waiting-for-my-Smart-Car" experience.
But after 7 or 8 months, I just got my "Hey, NoKarma, ... you can come configure your Smart car now..." tickler email. My interests (nay, blatant desires) were once again rekindled. Coupled with the fact that after several months of a 100-mile daily commute in a Rav-4 I will shortly be returning to a 100-mile daily commute in a Sequoia. I am not at all enthralled at the prospect of a more-than-doubled monthly gasoline bill ... even with this dip in gas prices.
So I'm back in line. I'm a believer again. I'm drinking the "metalic blue" Kool-Aid and waiting out my next stretch in the queue. Oh yeah, and "hello" to all yeh non-noobs ... and to those who already HAVE their Smart cars... stop gloating already.
Welcome. I didn't get excited until it was time to config. My wife was the one who put the $99 down, but we Gonfiged in Mid summer when Gas was over $4 a gallon. I got realy excited and so wanted to ditch the mini Van.
Now that we have it I wish I had more chances to get it away from my Wife.
Welcome! Just be careful your karma doesn't run over somebody's dogma.
heh... Well if the darned dogmas would just stay outta the danged streetmas, no one will get hurt! But thanks for the warm welcome. I'll keep my appetite and enthusiasm whetted in the forums. Also thinking of hitting a local dealer this weekend (now that things are feeling "seriouser" and "more committeder"). I suppose I *should* at least see what all this paddle shifter nonsense is all about, fer cripes sakes! O.O I do row on a canoe team and we shift paddles about ever 12 strokes -- is it similar in the Smart? ;-)
Oh no! Those are for water. We're on land and ours are for feet. You push one with your right foot, then the other with your left foot, and so on, and there it moves...
More than two years ago, a friend let me drive his brand new Smart Passion. The very next day, I was at the dealership in Guadalajara and bought our 2007 Black and Silver Passion. We have loved it ever since and driving it is a pleasure. We fill the tank once a month. Saturday, we'll top it up and head for the beach at Manzanillo for a week in the sun and sand with friends. The trip is from 5200 feet to sea level, through mountains and ravines in the sierra; the Smart loves it! We could take the toll road at 125 KpH but that wouldn't be near as much fun. We'll take the free road and DRIVE!

Kind regards and happy holidays to all,
NoKarma
I hear ya. My head keeps saying "no", but then I see a smart driving around town and I just gotta have one. I am so not a car person, but this little car has me all dazed and confused.
Like I said I would, I made my way to the dealership to finally lay my hands on one of these little guys before I get myself *too* committed to the process. WHAT FUN!! You know, these cars evoke a visceral response when you see 'em on the street ... they are truly *astonishingly* small! But what fun to actually get to kick the tires and examine it from bonnet to boot. And then to hop in a drive.
And what the hey... they just happened to have my Configuration's long-lost orphaned identical twin on the lot -- what are the odds?!? It's slumbering in my garage right now, I'm happy to report! Naturally, I wasn't exactly expecting to return home with a Smart Car for another several months, so I kinda had to make room in the garage on a moment's notice... fortunately, a very little room is all it takes! XD
