Just ordered

Hi there, just found the site after I ordered my smart Monday. I drove a few of these while in Italy and France a few years ago. I liked them but never thought about getting one. Now with a Jeep Liberty that only gets 18mpg and a F5 Cobra Replica that gets about 7mpg I have decided to take the plunge. Went to the dealer in Hartford on Monday night, test drove it to see if I still liked it and then placed my reservation. Is it really going to take 14 - 16 months to get this car? I know I could go on ebay and get one right away, but I prefer to be the first owner on this car. I am sure I will have questions and will be on here often while waiting and waiting and waiting....

Jon

The wait appears to be a fact of life; at least you'll get and 09 (if not a 10) model. However, orphans are out there if you keep looking.

I have read a few of the topics today and keep hearing about these orphans. I assume they are customer cancelled orders. I asked at the dealer what they do with the cars that get cancelled and all he said was they go to the next person on the list that wants that exact car. He never even mentioned an orhan list. Apparently, from reading here, that is not the case. Where do you find these orphans? I also thought the idea for reserving a car was a good idea if all involved followed the rules but, also from what I read here, that does not seem to be the case either.

it's a dealer by dealer decision. at that point the dealer owns the car, not PAG, nor smartUSA, so they can do what they want. some dealers load up the cars with every conceivable option to maximize profit and sell to who ever is the first one there. others try to match with reservists on the list. The latter is the course of action most here have preferred, I think. CT doesn't charge sales tax either if you live there. Sounds like an OK setup to me.

That is correct, smarts are sales tax exempt in CT, making the high "document" fees a little easier to swallow.
