also - with a 2 mile commute, it hardly seems necessary to buy a new car at all. any breakdown would not leave you stranded anywhere. you can put those thousands to far better use than car payments i think. pick up a very cheap used vehicle and put 4 miles a day on it for 50 years and you'll be tens of thousands ahead of the game, no matter what it gets for fuel economy.

If I only needed a spouse who could cook for me daily, dating would be much simpler.

I also want more out of a relationship with my car than my daily commute whether it's going to a drive-in, hitting a drive-through restaurant, or driving off to Vegas for a weekend. I just hope my car never gets tired of me ("tyred" for the english out there).

Well, I'm sure that you . . .

Well, I'm sure that you drive more than just the two miles to work and back. Hey, I'm retired, only drive to the grocery stores, swimming pool and doctors but manage to put about 350 miles a month on my little smartie.
And, yes, gas is only $2 or so now, but you know that it is going to increase in the future . . . and when it does, I'll bet it'll again rise to near $4. They've broken that psychological barrier now and gas at $3.25 would seem like a bargain~!
If you can swing the smart addition without breaking yourself, I'd go for it. . . you only go around once.
And that's assuming that your daughter doesn't sweet talk you out of it on a regular basis. . .

Rent one for a couple of days to really get a feel for it. I've had a lot of people rent mine who were waiting for theirs. Renting mine for 2 days has shown all of them that they do want one...

I'm on the highway everyday in my little car. I drive 38 miles to work and back. You just have to play it safe when driving it. If you don't the bigger car will get you. I don't care if this car was rated 6 stars, thats the facts of life. There are a lot of crazy drivers out there. They just pull in front of you!!! Like your not there. I always keep a good distance in front of me. Its the guy that rides my tail at 75 and 80 mph, that I'm worried about, on the highway. Play it safe! that all I can tell you. Hope you make a good decision.

When I test drove the Smart I was amazed at how"heavy" it drove - didn't feel small until I looked in the back! Lot of room in passenger area, though. I do LOVE the looks of it.
I am a very good driver, defensive, anticipating what idiots are about to do (here in L.A. we have more than our share). I live 2 miles from work, which is a plus.
I'm getting rally red (so assume it's a 2009) with black trim - a little ladybug!
Sounds like this is the perfect car for your needs!

We reserved ours in April '07.
We have our own Ma/Pa shop in a small town and by the time our car came in (April '08) the retail environment had deteriorated by a large amount. Had lots of second thoughts about going through with the purchase, even though the payments would be quite affordable.

The week our car was to arrive, we were watching, I think, the Today show and they were showing some Arab princeling taking delivery of a big Mercedes that had been gold-plated and then crusted with diamonds. Turned to my wife and said "Honey, let's go get our new car."

No, we're not saving as much gas money as during the summer, but we're buying MUCH less gas than pre-smart. Just trying to do my part to see that minor members of the Saudi royal family are reduced to driving stock Mercedes cars...

I'm proud of the fact that we are consuming less without any sacrifice at all. Most things promoted as "green" make me want to hurl, the smart, on the other hand, makes a difference in the real world. ( we do have re-usable shopping bags in the back, which I can't seem to remember to take into the store)

My earlier post comparing a Smart to a motorcycle wqas not about safety. the Smart is way more safe. I was referencing the fun driving factor. I love riding the bike but hate getting caught in the bad weather.

As for the safety part, I drive 43 miles each way to and from work daily plus running around town nets me about 127 miles per day average. The trips to the pumps are much more enjoyable in a Smart as it uses much less gas than my truck and even less than the motorcycle. With the gas prices dropping, I don't save as much cash, but they will go back up soon and I'll be ahead of the game.

When people ask about getting in an acident, I say that I am not planning on doing that in the near future but the design of the car has me well protected.
