Senate holds fate of ‘clunkers’ car discount - The Boston Globe
As of last night, the Senate had not scheduled a time to vote on whether it will approve $2 billion in additional funding for the week-old cash for clunkers incentive.
....legislators were working with the White House on resolving funding but that it was unclear what would happen. The Senate breaks for a monthlong recess on Friday, and if it doesn’t take up the issue the program runs out of money
Dealers’ troubles with submitting sales under the clunker program spurred concerns that the money was running out. The main problem stemmed from computer systems they used, said Rae Tyson, a spokesman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which administers the program.
The glitch created a backlog of unreported deals, and it’s still unclear how many sales have been made under the promotion. With 80,500 transactions logged as of Saturday, Tyson said, Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler vehicles accounted for 47 percent of sales made under the promotion. Trucks accounted for 83 percent of trade-ins, and cars made up 60 percent of the purchases, with the Ford Focus being the most popular
Meanwhile, George Leckenby, sales manager at Mazda of Everett, said his dealership has put the program on hold until it’s clear there will be enough government money to reimburse dealers.
“Until the [Senate] vote comes through, we’ve stopped,’’ Leckenby said, adding that sales staff is telling customers “if we can help them, we will. But we don’t want to put ourselves on a limb, either.’
