...because they are smart. when is the last time you heard of a new car with pre-ignition, holes in pistons, burnt valves and "ruined engines" due to using lower octane. yes if you push your car to it's limits you may hear the knocks and then mostly the ecu makes the adjustments. will the adjustments back down performance - yes if you try to to take it to the limits again. Scaring people to the point of them trying to suck the gas out of their tank is ridiculous. yeah big deal the smart is 10:1 compression. add a turbo and run 15lbs of boost and you'll need the octane. run your smart around town at 50 mph forever and start clogging your cat with unspent hi-octane gas.
I don't get why folks on this forum tell people to put the wrong size tire on the front of their cars but they can't have a gallon of 87 octane in the tank.......
